writing
When I failed the test the first time I started hating writing and I started to doubt my writing ablilites. I did not know why I failed the exam the first time and so I didnt know what I needed to correct in my writing. Because I was so down on myself about my writing abilities I failed the test the second time and things only started to get worse. I stopped caring about English and writing all together and never took it seriously. I stopped trying altogether and was placed in a lower level english class in college. I have always felt that I was a good writer and made good grades in english and all because of a placement test I was ripped from my opportunities. Knack for writing I think it is easier for people who are born with a knack for writing to write. People who are not interested or do not have a knack for writing tend to stress about writing. I know that when I stress about writing I get extreme writer's block that causes me to procrastinate. Then I'm stuck struggling to get papers submitted at the last minute. Writing is easy for people who are born with the knack”. I agree with this statement. I think that people with talent in writing spend less effort and time than a writer with modest talent in writing same papers. This doesn’t mean that people with no talent can not write good papers, it just means that they need to work very hard in order to achieve same results as the writers with a gift. Writing Equivalency
English Department of Wright State University, I am writing this letter as a proposal for my placement in a higher level english class. My Ohio State Proficiency Writing Tests do not represent my writing ability and my English GPA throughout high school can attest to this. Is it possible for me to take a college writing equivalency test to prove to myself and to others that I am a writer capable of writing at a level sufficient for regular or advanced writing classes in College. Sincerely, Shannon Nichols Posted at 08:53AM Apr 20, 2009 by Derek Dussek in General | Writing
Most of the time, my writing has been judged differently depending on who reads it. My English teachers appreciated my writing and I even had a poem published on television. Those people certainly thought I was good enough. Sadly, the staff grading the proficiency tests thought otherwise and didn’t even give me a much needed explanation. After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing, and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about. Once again not knowing the purpose of my writing, I failed the second time and things only got worse. So perhaps to protect myself from my doubts and because of the harbored feelings that English was unfair and unexplained, I stopped taking English seriously. Perhaps because of that lack of seriousness, I earned a 2 on the Advanced Placement English Exam, barely passed the twelfth-grade proficiency test, and was placed in developmental writing in college. I wish I knew why I failed that test, because then I might have written what was expected on the second try, maintained my enthusiasm for writing, and continued to do well. After once being a brilliant English mind, I feel like the possible English opportunities were ripped away from me, all because of the lack of a simple explanation. I think this experience is probably shared by many other students and I would reason that the English world has been robbed of many people that could have carried this world to the next level. Posted at 08:50AM Apr 20, 2009 by Catherine Miller in General | Comments[1] WritingKnack I feel that not everyone is born with a knack for things but some people are and that can be writing. If someone is born with a knack for writing doesnt mean that they are good at writing in all sorts of ways they might be strictly good at fiction or lit reviews. So not always does it mean if someone has a knack for something mean that they are good at all things that relate to that sort of thing. One could make this argument but I do not see how they would prove it. I believe that people who care and enjoy writing will find it easier. I don't see how one can study people to see if they have a knack for writing. But it is possible to study people to see if they care and enjoy writing. Posted at 08:20AM Apr 20, 2009 by Derek Dussek in General | Comments[1] A knack for writing If this statement is true then I was one of the poor, unfortunate fools that wasn't born with the knack for writing. Writing is hard, at least for me. I do know people that could write all day if allowed. Just because writing comes easy to some people it doesn't make them any better at writing than the people that find it hard to write. 4/20/09 I do not really think that someone is born with any special traits. I think that people pick up special traits as they begin to learn and become interested in things. So instead of someone being born with a knack, I feel that writing is much easier for people that acquire the knack. Some people are good at memorizing facts, some at working out long equations, and some people are very talented at putting ideas together and making them sound good. People that spend their childhood enjoying to write books and make up stories will probably get much more practice and writing is easier because they enjoy it so much more. This then makes it easier as they progress through school and all types of writing. Posted at 08:16AM Apr 20, 2009 by Catherine Miller in General | response to statement
I think writing is easy for people with a knack, it its just like anything with anybody else for a knack at something. However, the unfortunate majority of us have to work harder and than the people with knack for writing. We have to try to get that flow and style that is the 6th sense to writing. Some people have it and some people don’t. It’s like speed, some people can run really fast and some can’t, however, you can teach someone to get faster, but they can only get so much faster. I think that this statement is at least partially true in that it is a relative statement. I think that some people do have a natural “knack” for writing, and it is easier for them to put their ideas on paper in an organized and clear way. Others may have difficulty putting their thoughts down in a way that’s presentable for someone else to read. I don’t think that anyone is automatically good at writing, but I definitely think some people are naturally better because their brains work in a different way. Posted at 08:16AM Apr 20, 2009 by Josh Harris in General | Response to statement The statement, "Writing is easy for people born with the knack" is very true but it doesn't mention how it is also easy for people who study and develop their writing over time. I feel like part of this statement needs to be adjusted because no one person is born with the uncanny ability to write, we don't even understand how to speak our language until around 3 or 4 years old, let alone write it. For some it may seem that those around us have an easier time with writing and that may be from experience or perhaps reading more of the literature that goes along with that particular style of writing to give them that essence of "easy writing." Overall, I believe that this statement can be true but those that enjoy writing will have an easier time at it. Posted at 08:14AM Apr 20, 2009 by Kaitlin Cole Hassell in General | Writing Knack I believe that this statement is both true and not true in different ways. I think writing is more of a thing that is taught. Some people may be better at it then others but I feel like it is somewhat taught. Fiction writers need to have an imagination and all writers have to have a large vocabulary. I believe that everyone has the potential to be a writer but some people may not have to try as hard to write. Some people may just be born with a natural talent, like in any sport, anyone can be good at it if they work hard but certain people are just born with natural talent. People that enjoy writing will write more than the other who does not enjoy writing. Posted at 08:14AM Apr 20, 2009 by Jessica McBroom in General | The Knack
I think that the statement “Writing is easy for people born with the knack” is a very general statement. It just means that if people are good at writing then it comes easily for them but this is obvious. And what determines if you are a good writer? Writing is an act for expressing yourself and people do this in various ways. What means something to one writer may mean nothing to the other but this is not to say his writing is not good nor that it came easily.
