Ocean Isle, NC sandbags

I just got back from Sunset Beach NC to find the newspapers full of a discussion on shoring up inlets to preserve Ocean Isle properties that are currently sandbagged. One thing that is missing from all the accounts I have seen are pictures of the current situation. So I have posted above a picture I took of the west end of Ocean Isle from Sunset Beach across Tubbs Inlet(this link has a picture of the same shore when there was still some dune left). As you can see the sandbags are right next to the last house on the beach and the inlet is "dynamic." There has been significant erosion on the west end of Ocean Isle where residents have built much closer to the shore than in neighboring Sunset Beach.

Its an unfortunate situation, but building near a natural hazard is a preventable solution. The builders knew the risks of building next to an inlet and also that hardened reinforcement structures were prohibited in North Carolina. They also know that the state of NC will only allow sandbags for a certain number of years before they must be removed. Its deplorable to think builders were allowed to knowingly build in extremely hazardous areas and use the threat of the loss of these structures to blackmail legislators into supporting exceptions to the hardened structure rule.

As you can see from the photo, the sandbag wall acts as a hardened structure. The wave energy is increased against the wall which causes it to scour and erode the beach at the inlet. The public beach has completely disappeared. Allowing the precedent of hard stabilization to be made here in NC will only embolden future owners and builders engage in unwise building practices and ask the taxpayer to subsidize their stupidity. What are we to value, public beaches or private structures? The erosion isn't the problem, the house being in the way of the natural processes is.

Here is another picture of the same place taken in July 2007 before the sandbags went in, showing the erosion to the beach:
