Sports medicine and chemistry
Chemists have helped the sporting industry also by making medicines that help althetes and spectators. From aspirin to help a headache to polychloroprene sleeves to provide warmth and compression to promote the healing of wounds. Here is a website that has descriptions of many sports medicine and health products.
Banned substances and doping are common words in the English language today. Why is this? It is because of chemists. Olympic athletes are commonly given drug tests to test for illegal substances. Some chemists are helping to make these substances, and some are helping to test for these substances as well.
Some of these banned substances were originally developed for helpful purposes. Such as Human Growth Hormone (HGH), this was originally developed for children who have metabolic growth disorders. This is no wonder drug, and THIS DRUG IS NOT APPROVED BY ANY SPORTS ORGANIZATION!
The NSF (National Science Foundation) is starting a list of supplements that do not contain any of the banned ingredients of the sports organizations. Here is an article from NSF about this project, and here is a list of the approved supplements so far found. On this list will be products and companies that have complied with NSF's testing procedures.
What do you think of chemists contributions to the sporting medicine industry? Has it been a positive one or a negative one? If you have any comments or questions please make a comment.

The effect that chemists have had on sports is good in the sense that they help to ease pain for athlete. However many of these illegal substance which chemists have created have tarnished many sports. For example many baseball players have used steriods in baseball. This have given them added strength, durability, etc. It is good that mlb is getting more strict about substances and drugs within baseball. Steriods may be badly used in sports but in most everyday cases steriods can be very helpful. Steriods are naturally made by our body and many times cortisone steriods are prescribed by a doctor for skin ailments. Steriods are even used to combat asthma. This reminds me a lot of what you were saying about HGH. So overall I think chemists have approved the lives of many individuals but unfortunately many athletes have used these new drugs and substances in an incorrect way.

I am glad that you think that chemists are doing good things for athletes. I believe also that steroids are used for good purposes as well. I was once given a prescription for a steroid because of bug bites. So does anyone else have any comments on this issue?

Steroids are not a new thing anymore. Chemists and doctors often go for steroid to cure hard diseases, but the main question lies that when the docs know that prolonged usage of steroid can lead to serious complications, then why do they recommend it?
Of course steroids have positive effect as well (if used when required only)

It is true, the effect of certain drugs on sports is very high. HGH is one of the products even though good product not approved by sports organizations.
