For the contemporary social studies project I will be working with Ms. Betsy Brown at Durham Academy. I plan on visiting the school on November 6th and will be working with a group of 7th graders. Ms. Brown and I are currently working together to plan a history lesson for me which will incorporate either digital history or social studies gaming. Right now her class is studying Chinese Dynasties and we are currently discussing options that might work for that topic. Posted by Jennifer Whitworth on October 25, 2007 at 05:59 PM EDT # I will be working with Mary Landry at Culbreth Middle School in Chapel Hill. Mary teaches sixth grade social studies and language arts. I plan on visiting Mary's class during the week of November 26th. Right now, Mary and I are working on a social studies lesson that incorporates digital gaming within a unit on South America. Posted by Sue Carter on October 28, 2007 at 10:28 AM EDT # I will be working with a group of 7th graders who are currently studying Chinese history. During the time period I will be in the classroom they will be discussing the Qing Dynasty. On November 16th I will teach a lesson on the Opium Wars. I will first start with an overview of the Wars (i.e. how they started, what they meant to the Chinese and the British, how they ended). I will be teaching this information from notes the teacher that I am assisting created as well as a detailed background information sheet found here: http://www.sacu.org/opium2.html. After the instructional part of the lesson is done the students will play a type of educational game on the Opium Wars. The object of the activity is to put six significant events that happened during the War in chronological order so that they [the students] can open up a vault that holds more information about the wars. The activity can be found here: http://www.nmm.ac.uk/upload/package/29/OnlineZone/FourActivityZone.htm. After students have ?cracked the code? they will be presented with a slideshow of the events in the order that they happened. I am fortunate enough to have the students in a computer lab during the day I will be teaching so each student will have a computer at his/her disposal in order to play the game. I plan on also using an overhead for information/notes on the war. After they have completed the activity I plan on having them do something on their own or in groups about the Opium Wars. I am meeting with the teacher I am assisting next week to discuss this activity. Hopefully it will be something with the images the students viewed during the completion of the Opium War activity. Posted by Jennifer Whitworth on October 31, 2007 at 05:26 PM EDT # I plan on implementing Google Earth and Google Mashups in my contemporary social studies project. I would like to foucs on WWII but since I am currently in the 1st grade classroom in order to implement this I would need to focus on local neighborhoods of Garner, NC. I would be able to work with Mrs. Stallings class at Smith Elementary during November after Thanksgiving break. Posted by kelly maxwell on November 04, 2007 at 10:22 PM EST # I will plan to implement ArcGis which is better than Google Earth. For this project you will work with contemporary web-based resources and related approaches to teaching social studies subject matter that reflect 21st century learning goals. These approaches might include resources such as these
- Social studies gaming (e.g. Civilization or Cyber Nations - http://www.cybernations.net)
- Digital History (e.g. American Memory ? http://memory.loc.gov)
- Web-based geo-spatial presentations of information (e.g. Google Earth)
Your work on this project will take form as action research. I will expect you to study one of these resources, plan for instruction using the resources, implement the activities in your class or a classroom setting, and report/reflect on the teaching and learning experience Your work will be due in stages and will be posted to this blog More information about the project is available in the Wednesday Oct 24 post under the Contemporary Teaching in Social Studies Topic area of this blog. Please reply with a comment to this post indicating the plan for your teaching including the grade level, date(s), and topic by October 30
