Toucans Meeting 3

06:34PM Mar 22, 2009 in category General by Danielle Paldino

7:02:30 PM Rafiki2588: hey
7:02:36 PM Alicia1741: hey guys
7:02:38 PM John: hello
7:03:01 PM Alicia1741: has danielle gotten aim yet?
7:03:14 PM Rafiki2588: i sent her an email
7:03:26 PM John: she had one, but the software she uses wouldnt let her
join a chat
7:03:43 PM John: maybe she can download another program
7:03:53 PM John: keep checkin your email matt
7:04:02 PM ctsoccer13: hey
7:04:08 PM Alicia1741: hey hey
7:04:09 PM John: hey chase
7:05:02 PM John: so whats the plan?
7:05:14 PM Alicia1741: should we just e-mail our proposals so we can look
at em all?
7:05:16 PM Rafiki2588: what do you guys think of this brief intro
7:05:20 PM Rafiki2588: One of the biggest challenges facing the United
States today is the growing demand for fossil fuels, the emissions they
produce, and the greater dependence on foreign nations to provide oil.
Finding suitable alternatives to replace our current generation of gas and
diesel fueled engines and in the mean time excellent technologies to
supplement the supply of fossil fuels should be a top priority.
7:05:40 PM Rafiki2588: the second sentence is worded funny i think
7:06:02 PM Rafiki2588: it could be worded better, rather
7:06:25 PM Alicia1741: ok, i think i'm on a completely different
wavelength than everyone else
7:06:30 PM Rafiki2588: uh oh
7:06:31 PM ctsoccer13: haha
7:06:31 PM Rafiki2588: why
7:06:33 PM ctsoccer13: how so?
7:06:39 PM Alicia1741: did you guys see the e-mails between me and danielle?
7:06:46 PM Rafiki2588: yea
7:07:01 PM ctsoccer13: nope
7:07:09 PM John: sorry about that chase
7:07:21 PM John: i screwd up the first email and yours was wrong
7:07:21 PM Rafiki2588: we're proposing our research idea to our teacher,
that's the goal for tonight
7:07:33 PM John: so it didnt include you in the replys
7:07:34 PM Alicia1741: so... did you write your proposal the way i did,
where you're proposing that we write our project on alternative fuels, or
did you write it like danielle where you're proposing that alternative
fuels are in demand?
7:07:40 PM Alicia1741: ok
7:07:58 PM ctsoccer13: no biggy
7:08:13 PM Alicia1741: cause the way i interpreted it, i didn't really
write much about the alternative fuels themselves.
7:08:25 PM ctsoccer13: yea, so in the intro we should present the problem
and why we should even be considering alternative fuels
7:08:37 PM Rafiki2588: well i just made a list of bullet points to include
to make the research sound like a good idea which does include a brief
summary of the intended topic
7:08:47 PM ctsoccer13: i didn't fully write it out, i just... yea, i made
bullet points
7:08:58 PM ctsoccer13: wrote ideas of what kinda stuff should be where
7:08:58 PM Alicia1741: this is what i started mine with (it's not that
strong, but it got the point across): We request permission to write our
final project on alternative automobile energy sources.  As a group, we
discussed all of our ideas for the final project to come up with one that
would be best for all of us.  We are all very familiar with the world’s
search for alternative fuels for vehicles, and it is a topic that we are
highly interested in.
7:09:17 PM John: FYI im not in the convo right now... i'm workin on helpin
danielle
7:09:38 PM Rafiki2588: We need to answer a few questions:  Why is this
research important?  Why should we "devote resources to it"?  Is this a
good, fruitful topic?
7:09:39 PM Alicia1741: she specified that we need to say why we picked our
topic
7:09:44 PM Alicia1741: yeah
7:09:45 PM ctsoccer13: i think it's supposed to be more about presenting
the problem or research topic moreso than asking for permission
7:09:56 PM Rafiki2588: i agree with u chase
7:10:08 PM Rafiki2588: we need to tell her why this research is important
7:10:09 PM Alicia1741: ok then i interpreted it a little different
7:10:17 PM Rafiki2588: we need to sell this idea
7:10:30 PM ctsoccer13: yea... so in the intro we should talk about how the
current fuels are polluting and fossil fuels are running out
7:10:35 PM Rafiki2588: yeaaa
7:10:48 PM ctsoccer13: and the demand is getting to be too great for any
one fuel
7:10:55 PM Rafiki2588: right
7:10:56 PM Alicia1741: k. i left that for the "problem" section
7:10:57 PM ctsoccer13: then present the approach of researching other fuels
7:11:36 PM Rafiki2588: and while we're developing a fossil fuel
replacement, we should simultaneously be looking for good supplements to
ease demand on fossil fuels and begin to make the transition to a
non-fossil fuel economy
7:11:51 PM ctsoccer13: yea
7:12:12 PM ctsoccer13: but, as far as the introduction, it should just be
a brief overview of the problem at hand
7:12:19 PM Rafiki2588: here's a quick thing i wrote earlier.  Dont count
it for style just content
7:12:25 PM Rafiki2588: We’ll research four alternatives to gasoline
including clean diesel, ethanol, hydrogen, and electric as well as hybrids
of these.   For each case we’ll examine infrastructure requirements, such
as filling stations and production, also we’ll study the process and
requirements for integrating these new fuels into existing auto
technology.  In other words, how each of these fuels can be used in a
regular car; from onboard fuel storage to efficient and practical engines.
New maintenance demands of these new systems and the difficulty with
which these new vehicles will be introduced to mainstream consumers will
be researched as well.
7:12:26 PM ctsoccer13: pull in some general facts about the increasing
demand, decreasing supply
7:12:30 PM Rafiki2588: yes
7:12:56 PM ctsoccer13: what section is that for?
7:13:01 PM ctsoccer13: objectives?
7:13:08 PM Rafiki2588: i dunno i guess That's a good objectives section
7:13:22 PM ctsoccer13: yea... i keep reverting back to that one proposal
example she gave us
7:13:26 PM Rafiki2588: i mean the language is a bit rough but it can be
polished
7:13:29 PM ctsoccer13: as far as structure
7:13:31 PM Rafiki2588: ah
7:13:37 PM Rafiki2588: which one
7:13:49 PM ctsoccer13: i think it was the alternative fuels one
7:14:04 PM ctsoccer13: it had an intro, then more elaboration on the
problem, then objectives
7:14:16 PM Rafiki2588: yea
7:14:33 PM Rafiki2588: oh, i havent read it yet
7:14:56 PM Alicia1741: alright, we can definitely use your intro matt
after we clean it up a bit. it looks good
7:15:04 PM Rafiki2588: k
7:15:44 PM John: YAY
7:15:48 PM dlpaldino: sorry, everyone!
7:15:48 PM Rafiki2588: hey danielle
7:15:50 PM Rafiki2588: no worries
7:15:55 PM Alicia1741: hey danielle, glad you made it!
7:15:55 PM ctsoccer13: hey danielle
7:15:55 PM John: ok, someone bring us up to speed please???
7:16:09 PM ctsoccer13: we were talking about the purpose of the proposal
7:16:30 PM ctsoccer13: and matt and i were thinking it should be more of a
presentation of the problem with an answer as to why we should research it
7:16:50 PM Rafiki2588: we're selling the idea of doing this research which
involves a bit of back ground
7:17:06 PM Rafiki2588: we're trying to convey why this research must be done
7:17:12 PM ctsoccer13: right...
7:17:14 PM dlpaldino: Does anyone have a sample they wrote up?  If so can
you email it around? I can send mine tomorrow.
7:17:17 PM Rafiki2588: ease demand, supplements to fossil fuels
7:17:31 PM ctsoccer13: and i kept reverting back to the proposal she
provided about alternative fuels as structure
7:17:38 PM ctsoccer13: subconsciously
7:17:58 PM Rafiki2588: Damnit how can pizza hut be out of personal pan
pizzas?
7:18:05 PM Rafiki2588: sorry, im a bit off topic
7:18:10 PM dlpaldino: lol. that's lame
7:18:13 PM Rafiki2588: yea it is
7:18:19 PM Alicia1741: lol
7:18:22 PM Rafiki2588: We’ll research four alternatives to gasoline
including clean diesel, ethanol, hydrogen, and electric as well as hybrids
7:18:34 PM Rafiki2588: thats what i wrote, danielle
7:18:49 PM Rafiki2588: for an objectives section
7:19:07 PM Rafiki2588: and this is a shotty version of a brief intro
7:19:15 PM Rafiki2588: One of the biggest challenges facing the United
States today is the growing demand for fossil fuels, the emissions they
produce, and the greater dependence on foreign nations to provide oil.
Finding suitable alternatives to replace our current generation of gas and
diesel fueled engines and in the mean time excellent technologies to
supplement the supply of fossil fuels should be a top priority.
7:20:12 PM dlpaldino: Sounds good.  We need to get all our ideas into one
document, format it, and pass it around for editing, I think.
7:20:30 PM dlpaldino: Since we have to turn it in on Fri. we don't have a
lot of time.
7:22:10 PM Alicia1741: so if we use that first paragraph for objectives,
put it in bullet format, :
- research four alternatives to gasoline including clean diesel, ethanol,
hydrogen, and electric as well as hybrids of these
- examine infrastructure requirements, such as filling stations and
production, for each
- study the process and requirements for integrating these new fuels into
existing auto technology
-research new maintenance demands of these new systems and the difficulty
with which these new vehicles will be introduced to mainstream consumers

7:22:31 PM Rafiki2588: excellent!
7:22:42 PM dlpaldino: agreed, I like that.
7:22:47 PM Rafiki2588: we can easily fill up 2 pages in no time if we get
some more content flowing here
7:22:50 PM Alicia1741: alright, one section down!
7:22:59 PM Rafiki2588: lets concentrate on the problem section
7:23:08 PM Rafiki2588: lets try not to call it that cuz thats plaigarism
7:23:15 PM ctsoccer13: i was working on tweaking matt's intro he wrote up
7:23:21 PM Rafiki2588: cool
7:23:21 PM John: plus we need the schedule
7:23:26 PM John: and thats about half a page
7:23:38 PM Rafiki2588: Alright hell thats already 2 full pages of stuff
7:23:43 PM dlpaldino: I worked up a tentative schedule (needs some filler,
likely) but it's at work.
7:23:44 PM Rafiki2588: we're rollin now
7:23:45 PM Rafiki2588: this is good
7:23:47 PM Rafiki2588: lets see it
7:24:00 PM dlpaldino: sry, have to send it tomorrow
7:24:24 PM Rafiki2588: why
7:24:52 PM dlpaldino: b/c it's on my work comp. and I didn't bring it home
w/ me today, LOL
7:24:59 PM dlpaldino: like a dummy
7:25:09 PM Rafiki2588: lol
7:25:25 PM Rafiki2588: dont worry about it, can you remember what was on
it?  Maybe we can throw something together right now
7:25:51 PM dlpaldino: it was dates and frames of times things were due,
when we would review and edit the document, etc.
7:26:04 PM dlpaldino: prolly abt 8 lines, table format.
7:26:32 PM John: yea, i wouldnt worry about the schedule too much
7:26:53 PM dlpaldino: we can add it and review it tomorrow
7:26:58 PM John: i dont foresee that taking very long
7:26:59 PM Rafiki2588: ok
7:27:01 PM ctsoccer13: The United States alone consumes around 20 million
barrels of gasoline every day, most of which is imported from other
countries.  With oil not being a renewable resource, it's obvious that our
supplies will eventually deplete.  Also, the burning of fossil fuels has
been found to have adverse effects on our environment.  Thus, one of the
biggest challenges facing the United States today is the growing demand
for fossil fuels, the emissions they produce, and the greater dependence
on foreign nations to provide oil.  Finding suitable alternatives to
replace our current generation of gas and diesel fueled engines and in the
mean time excellent technologies to supplement the supply of fossil fuels
should be a top priority.
7:27:20 PM ctsoccer13: mainly just added to lead in and present the
problem a bit better so far
7:27:22 PM Rafiki2588: Awesome!
7:27:38 PM ctsoccer13: couldnt really find a problem with what you've
written for it
7:27:46 PM Rafiki2588: I have to run up to hillsborough street real quick
I will be back in no time flat
7:27:49 PM Rafiki2588: its good
7:27:55 PM Rafiki2588: i like the lead in
7:27:59 PM Rafiki2588: facts are sweet
7:28:13 PM Alicia1741: that looks really good
7:28:31 PM ctsoccer13: just did a quick search--found that first fact on
wikianswers
7:28:38 PM Rafiki2588: sweeeeet
7:28:39 PM Rafiki2588: lol
7:28:46 PM Alicia1741: yay wikipedia! lol
7:28:53 PM ctsoccer13: haha
7:29:00 PM dlpaldino: be sure to reference it!!
7:29:04 PM Rafiki2588: wikipedia rocks my world
7:29:08 PM John: how bout this... does anybody feel like their proposal
could be used as a good foundation?
7:29:09 PM dlpaldino: is someone taking this all down as one document?
7:29:22 PM Alicia1741: mine's not really relevant
7:29:48 PM ctsoccer13: i think the first thing we need to do in the
proposal is present the issue, then present how we'll research it, etc...
7:29:50 PM dlpaldino: Y'all saw mine about half done already.  I focused
mainly on biodiesel, but changed that a bit after the conversation Alicia
and I had.
7:29:55 PM Alicia1741: i made it more about convincing her to let us write
the project on alternative fuels than about the actualy problem of fossil
fuels
7:29:59 PM ctsoccer13: so i was trying to form that into the first paragraph
7:30:12 PM John: k
7:30:17 PM ctsoccer13: brief, shocking facts to grab the reader's attention
7:30:41 PM ctsoccer13: and, if you copy that paragraph, change it to 10
million--that was a typo
7:30:47 PM dlpaldino: Alicia, I think that's what we're really supposed to
be focusing on.  But we do need to state some stuff abt. the issue.
7:31:07 PM dlpaldino: I think we should all send around what we have.  I
can take it tomorrow and edit it into one document and send it around for
review.
7:31:43 PM ctsoccer13: i was saying earlier, i really didn't do any formal
writing--i just wrote bullet points about what sort of stuff we should put
where
7:32:12 PM dlpaldino: that's still something down that we can incorporate
into a document
7:32:17 PM ctsoccer13: ok
7:32:29 PM Alicia1741: that might be a lot of work danielle
7:32:38 PM Alicia1741: don't wanna leave you to do it all!
7:32:59 PM John: if ya'll wanna send all you have to me, i'll throw
something together tonite and send it around tomorrow so you can all edit
it
7:33:02 PM dlpaldino: LOL, I don't expect it to be too bad.  I do this
crap (doc. editing) all the time.
7:33:45 PM John: agreed
7:34:07 PM John: i just feel kinda bad.. i dont have much, just research
7:34:15 PM Alicia1741: are you sure you guys are ok with that?
7:34:38 PM Alicia1741: i mean... i thought mine was good but. like i said,
it's not really what we're talking about doing anymore lol
7:34:42 PM ctsoccer13: i'm gonna at least elaborate a bit more before i
send mine around
7:34:59 PM dlpaldino: I can't think of a better way to do it, really.
Posting bits and pieces is good, but too easy to duplicate things and put
more info than necessary.
7:35:09 PM ctsoccer13: i really have bullets saying stuff like "talk about
pollution -- ozone layer, greenhouse effect, water supplies"
7:35:31 PM ctsoccer13: so, i'll at least get some facts written out before
i send it
7:35:34 PM dlpaldino: but that's good-- we don't have to go into details
in this proposal (I don't think!!)
7:35:52 PM dlpaldino: or, well... TOO into the details.
7:36:00 PM Alicia1741: yeah that's true
7:36:02 PM ctsoccer13: agreed
7:36:17 PM ctsoccer13: i thnk we do need to hit the main topics we'll be
discussing and researching though
7:36:48 PM John: ok... i think i have a plan......
7:36:53 PM dlpaldino: agreed.  so let's lay THAT out here, and I'll make
sure when I get all the stuff together to put that in the objectives.
7:36:56 PM dlpaldino: Ok, what??
7:37:26 PM John: chase...what exactly do you have done as of now?
7:37:34 PM John: and you too alicia?
7:37:59 PM Alicia1741: i wrote a little over a page as a mini-proposal
7:38:01 PM Alicia1741: but like i said...
7:38:09 PM Alicia1741: it's not exactly what we're looking for
7:38:21 PM John: doenst matter...
7:38:24 PM Alicia1741: my qualifications section might be useful
7:38:28 PM John: k
7:38:35 PM John: what about you chase?
7:38:48 PM ctsoccer13: Intro
-shocking fact (grab reader's attention)
-brief explanation of the issue
-state the problem we'll research

-In-depth about issue--include some facts
   - talk about pollution
        -ozone layer
        -greenhouse effect
        -watersupplies
        -acid rain
   - depletion of oil supplies
      - increasing gas prices
          - has an effect on economy (recession)
      - no other form of fuel for transportation
   - reliance on other countries
       - leaves US open to be manipulated

- talk about how we'll research it
-schedule

7:39:03 PM ctsoccer13: ideas, mainly
7:39:03 PM John: k
7:39:13 PM John: heres the plan...
7:39:49 PM John: chase, turn some of those ideas into complete thoughts
then send it to me
7:39:57 PM John: alicia, send me what you have
7:40:02 PM John: i already have matts
7:40:10 PM John: my info is just raw research
7:40:25 PM John: i'll throw it together in a rough copy, clean it up a lil
7:40:27 PM dlpaldino: I've got practically a whole doc. that needs.. more
stuff
7:40:40 PM John: send it to danielle tomorrow AM
7:40:53 PM John: and you can combine and clean it up
7:40:59 PM dlpaldino: I'll incorporate them together.  Sounds good.
7:41:03 PM John: send it around and we can all edit
7:41:11 PM John: thats work for everyone?
7:41:16 PM ctsoccer13: yup
7:41:17 PM dlpaldino: works for me
7:41:19 PM Alicia1741: sounds good to me if you guys are ok with it
7:41:24 PM John: awesome
7:41:26 PM ctsoccer13: i'll form ideas and send it to you tonight
7:41:32 PM John: cool
7:42:02 PM dlpaldino: I should be able to get it back out by 3 tomorrow, I
think.  So that should give us enough time in the evening to have everyone
critique it
7:42:17 PM John: k
7:42:18 PM dlpaldino: hopefully earlier
7:42:35 PM John: do we wanna have one more meeting before we turn it in?
7:42:42 PM John: or just use email?
7:42:46 PM Alicia1741: it'd probably be a good idea...
7:42:52 PM Alicia1741: cause we all might have different edits
7:42:55 PM dlpaldino: tomorrow evening?  That would be fine with me.
7:43:17 PM John: how bout this....
7:43:24 PM dlpaldino: I'll turn track changes on before I send it out.
It's be nice if we could pass it from one person to the next but that
might take too long.
7:43:38 PM ctsoccer13: yea...
7:43:39 PM John: ok
7:43:44 PM John: i was just gonna say...
7:43:52 PM John: send it one person at a time in series
7:44:00 PM John: so you always get eh most recent copy
7:44:09 PM John: *the
7:44:11 PM dlpaldino: lol!  well, let's try it.
7:44:17 PM Alicia1741: i think it's a good idea
7:44:27 PM Alicia1741: should we do it by when people have time?
7:44:37 PM dlpaldino: yes.
7:44:37 PM Alicia1741: my thursday night schedules are kind of weird
7:44:52 PM dlpaldino: what about the afternoon, then?  I could send it to
you first.
7:45:07 PM Alicia1741: i have class at 3:50
7:45:23 PM Alicia1741: i have a break from 5:05-7:30
7:45:36 PM Alicia1741: so if i could get it by like 5:30 i could have it
out by 6:30
7:45:38 PM dlpaldino: ok, what about before 3:50?
7:45:50 PM ctsoccer13: i'm in class 2:20 - 6:30
7:45:56 PM Alicia1741: that'd be fine, could you get it done by 2:30 or so?
7:46:04 PM John: im done at 1
7:46:23 PM ctsoccer13: yea, i can edit it by then
7:46:40 PM dlpaldino: Yep.  I'll do that and send it to Alicia.  Then, she
sends it to Lionheart (lol).  Chase last? before we meet?
7:46:54 PM dlpaldino: Maybe rafiki will be available before him.
7:47:07 PM John: rafiki is matt
7:47:09 PM John: im john
7:47:12 PM John:
7:47:12 PM Alicia1741: do you know matt's schedule, john?
7:47:15 PM dlpaldino: I thought so!
7:47:18 PM John: lemme call him
7:47:27 PM dlpaldino: But didn't want to screw names up, lol
7:47:58 PM John: hes done after 4.30
7:48:07 PM Alicia1741: alright so i'll send it to you first
7:48:10 PM Alicia1741: you send it to matt
7:48:14 PM Alicia1741: and matt will send it to chase
7:48:25 PM dlpaldino: aright, awesome.  then we get on here at like 8ish?
7:48:26 PM John: k
7:48:36 PM Alicia1741: i have class till 845
7:48:45 PM Alicia1741: is 9 too late?
7:48:47 PM John: test to study for too right?
7:48:51 PM Alicia1741: yes ugh
7:48:52 PM Alicia1741: 2
7:48:54 PM Alicia1741: tests
7:49:12 PM John: we could just get on friday afternoon before we submit?
7:49:15 PM dlpaldino: dang, that sucks.  Just email then? That'd be fine
with me.
7:49:20 PM Alicia1741: that would work best for me
7:49:20 PM John: k
7:49:24 PM Alicia1741: either way
7:49:32 PM dlpaldino: I won't be able to get on during the day at all (work).
7:49:44 PM Alicia1741: alright
7:49:45 PM John: k
7:49:50 PM John: so email that night
7:50:07 PM Alicia1741: k, chase can e-mail out the final copy
