Career Fair

At the career fair I spoke with a representative from Franklin County Schools.  I am in Agricultural Education and this was the only school system that was at the career fair this year.  I leaned that Franklin County currently has 4 Agricultural Education classes offered; these include Biotechnology, Horticulture I, Agriscience, and Mechanics course.  The women I spoke to told me that many of the teachers are on the verge of retiring so the job outlook is very good.  She also said the county was open to many different types of Agricultural Education courses and that at one time they offered Animal Science and wouldn’t be opposed to offering that class again.

Franklin County Schools are committed to their students and their future and that is something that I look for in a school system.  They also believe that it is important to stay involved in the community and not just tech the students.  I have always been involved in my local community and I think it is important to carry that one wherever I decide to go.  Teachers need to be seen as leaders and community mentors and I believe that Franklin County Schools does a good job of having that perfect balance.

Right now my future goals are to finish up all of my classes with a least a C and graduate with honors in the fall of 2011.  I plan on student teaching in the spring of 2011 and then finishing up all of my extra classes in the fall.  I hope to teach a middle school class because I tend to do better with younger kids but if there are no job openings for a middle school I would not mind teaching a horticulture class.  Franklin County school system seems very flexible in the agricultural education classes that they offer; this is good for me because I am still not 100% sure on what exactly it is I want to teach.   This conversation did help me in preparing to reach my goals.  Ms. Jones told me that I was on the right track with what I m currently doing and that I need to take the PRAXIS sometime within the next few months.

At first I was very nervous when I approached the recruiter.  Even though I am a junior and have had practice in doing this before I still felt a little nervous.  I guess since I am a junior and am actually going to have to start looking for a full time job soon, it made me realize that I don’t have that much more time.  Ms. Jones was very friendly and she made it very easy to speak with her about the school system and what classes and jobs are offered right now.  She was friendly and helpful and she gave me her personal email to keep in touch if I ever had any questions.  If I want to improve my chances of launching my personal career I need to get more involved in school now.  Maybe join another club or become more active in the club I am currently in.  I also need to get more experience in the field of AG Ed.

Franklin County is located next to Wake County in North Carolina.  They have 3 high schools, 3 middles schools and 8 elementary schools putting the total number of students at 8,600.  They are looking for committed teachers who hold themselves to the highest standards, an individual who will be a teacher, leader, and mentor in the school and in the community.  Someone who can engage students and make them want to learn, they must have good energy and be enthusiastic about their job.

Overall this was a good experience.  I am very pleased with the information I found out from the recruiter and I will definitely consider Franklin County Schools when I go to start applying for a job.
