seeking On-campus FM Ambassadors
I am seeking current FM students to act as On-campus Ambassadors. An on-campus ambassador agrees to meet with prospective students on campus, is willing to have their email address given to prospective students. The commitment is small, and they can resign from being an ambassador at any time.
Participation in this volunteer activity would be considered a personal favor to me.
If you are interested in being an Ambassador, please send a message to Mrs. Bucklad.
Best regards, Prof. Scroggs

Welcome message
Welcome new FM students! Here are some items to help in the transition to NCSU. Additional details will be provided in the FM Blog at http://blogs.lib.ncsu.edu/page/fmstudents.
Your orientation to NCSU is the morning of August 18, and your orientation to the FM program is the afternoon of August 18. You will be given a pre-requisites self-test during orientation.
Academic Courses: The preferred schedule is ECG 590i, ISE 711, and MA 546. If you didn't get a full schedule, consider MBA 590a. Several seats in MBA 590a.001 will be opened to new FM students. The course is described at http://mgt.ncsu.edu/erm/OverviewofEnterpriseRiskManagement.php, and would form a good fall schedule with MA 546 and ECG 590. Send email to me if you wish to be considered for this course (scroggs@ncsu.edu). I am your contact regarding registration problems.
Student Seminar: MA 591f.001 is the Financial Math Student Seminar. Registration for the course is optional; however, participation in mandatory. We will begin the course reading some of Borbye's "Secrets to Success in Industry Careers." Two copies of the book will be on reserve in our library, or you can purchase the book (e.g. from amazon.com). The blog for this seminar is http://blogs.lib.ncsu.edu/page/fmseminar.
International students: The special arrangements for international students is handled completely by OIS (http://www.ncsu.edu/oisss/). The OIS orientation and information are important for all international students to attend.
Non-residents: Students who are not residents of North Carolina can apply for residency only after being here for 12 months. For this reason, it would be good to arrive in Raleigh at least a week before classes start.

Selecting Electives -- ISE 711 is full
Q: I missed the seats for core course ISE 711 Section 01. Now I have to take courses among electives
I am in need of your guidance for selecting the electives, so that it will go with my other courses.
A: Choosing an elective requires interaction -- it depends on your interest and background. I suggest you pre-select a course that sounds interesting (and you are qualified to take), then revise it when you have a chance to interact with advisers (e.g. during Orientation, or just before classes start this fall).

Modeling and Analyzing High-Frequency Financial Data, Feb 29Department of Statistics Seminar
Department of Statistics Seminar North Carolina State University
presents
Yazhen Wang
National Science Foundation and University of Connecticut
Modeling and Analyzing High-Frequency
Financial Data
Abstract
Volatilities of asset returns are central to the theory and
practice of asset
pricing, portfolio allocation, and risk management. In financial
economics,
there is extensive research on modeling and forecasting volatility up
to the
daily level based on Black-Scholes, diffusion, GARCH, stochastic
volatility
models and implied volatilities from option prices. Nowadays, thanks to
technological innovations, high-frequency financial data are available
for a
host of different financial instruments on markets of all locations and
at
scales like individual bids to buy and sell, and the full distribution
of such
bids. The availability of high-frequency data stimulates an upsurge
interest in
statistical research on better estimation of volatility. This
talk will start with a review on
low-frequency financial time series and high-frequency financial data.
Then I
will introduce popular realized volatility computed from high-frequency
financial data and present my work on wavelet methods for analyzing
jump and
volatility variations and the matrix factor model for handling large size volatility matrices.
