On Saturday, February 21, over 600 First Year College students attended the 2009 Academic Networking Panels. Juniors, seniors, and recent grads in 61 different majors and minors, along with college advisors and a few professors, met in 11 panels and spoke informally about what it is like to be a student in their college and de-partment, the skills and aptitudes a successful student needs to have, challenges and op-portunities, such as research, participating in conferences, and student organizations. The older students spoke frankly about whether they felt they’d made the right choice of ma-jor, which courses are tough but necessary and how to tackle them, what internships and co-op’s they’d done, and what their career plans are.
The Academic Networking Panels have succeeded for many years because of collaboration between the First Year College, the Transition Program, and the colleges. Melissa Simpson led this year’s planning committee, working with Millie Herget, George Morell (TP), Julie Nelson (TP), and Dawn Sohns.
