funding available for undergraduate research projects
I just saw this announcement soliciting applications for Undergraduate Research Awards. Anyone interested in pursuing a research project in insect systematics or museum science in the Insect Museum should contact me (ncsu.edu email: andy_deans) soon to discuss endless possibilities. Our insect collection overflows with fun (and publishable) projects, and we need motivated souls to help in the discovery. The deadline for proposals is midnight, October 28, 2008. We have resources to facilitate the following aspects of potential projects:

Not really what our research collection looks like, but this is a cool photo nonetheless. Thanks to Michelle McFarlane for capturing this image.
- DNA sequencing
- dissections, morphology
- scanning electron microscopy (TEM/ESEM)
- light microscopy/imaging
- insect collection/preparation/labeling/identification
- databasing, data exposure through the Web
- phylogenetics (answering evolutionary questions, testing hypotheses)
- taxonomy (revising taxa, describing new species)
- curation methods
- numerous other aspects of insect biology that I am forgetting...
