new projects started at the Museum

We're in serious data collection mode right now ('tis the season), which has prevented us from posting anything meaningful on our blog since István's posts on the great Hungarian expedition (parts one and two). That'll slowly change over the next week or two, though, as we have some B-I-G announcements coming up. I'll start slowly and then build it up for the grand finale later this week.

Project 1: You may have notice some slight changes in the Insect Museum website, especially in the rotating banner (just says "Insect Museum" now) and the "branding bar" (you read that right) across the top. The rolling out of NCSU's new brand campaign means the logo can only be positioned in a certain way and comprised of certain colors. Out with the old and in with the new. Making these changes has helped motivate me to update the content of our site, which is good, but it may take awhile. My goal is new text by August 15.

The beginnings of HAO - (l to r) István Mikó, Katja Seltmann, Andy Deans, and Matt Yoder.

Project 2: This is much funner to write about! The Hymenoptera Anatomy Ontology project officially kicked off last month with the arrival of Katja Seltmann (formerly of Morphbank), and gained strength on July 1 with the addition of Matt Yoder (formerly with the Platygastroidea PBI). Follow along on our other blog - http://hymao.blogspot.com/ - if you're interested. We have some immediate deadlines to meet, but after that you'll find some (hopefully) interesting posts concerning complex morphological issues and the new tools we're developing.

More news to follow. In the meantime maybe we can lure Keith and Daniela to post from the field. They're in Ecuador right now, hunting down horse flies (Tabanidae)!
