taxonomic problems are favored for the research worker in North Carolina

brochure with giant grasshopper on cover
I guess grasshoppers, like those walks to school uphill both ways in three feet of snow and driving rain, were bigger in those days. These kids just don't understand how easy they have it!

We've spent the last two weeks moving our slide and alcohol-preserved collections to their new room (more on that soon, I promise!), which has opened up a ton of cabinet space in the pinned collection. The change is quite dramatic and heartening, I have to say. During this process we've also uncovered some surprises - not all of them good (again, more later). Here's one of the fun ones: a late 1950s or early 1960s brochure about Entomology at NC State College.

My favorite aspects of this brochure are the descriptions of Gardner Hall (our current building, which will be demolished at some point in the next 5-10 years, probably):

Gardner Hall, home of the Department of Entomology and other biological science departments at North Carolina State College. This modern, 100,000 square foot building, with well-equipped classrooms and laboratories, is well suited for research

Hmmmmmm..."well-equipped classrooms and laboratories"...right. And this statement about research in the Entomology Department:

taxonomic...problems are favored for the research worker in North Carolina

That's right, taxonomic problems are favored for the research worker in North Carolina. Talk about support for systematics - we've had it for 50 years, at least!

Thanks to Elizabeth MacLeod, our new museum assistant, for scanning the brochure!

haha, wow, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Gardner looks exactly the same.
