CALS Career Expo Experience

On October 29th 2009 I attended the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Career Expo in Talley Student Center. This was a very unique experience for me. I talked with a few different companies but the one I was most interested in is the Disney Internships. I had a nice conversation with that recruiter.

My career goals are to become an agriculture teacher. I chose this because of my love for agriculture, the National FFA Organization, and the interactions you have as a teacher. I wanted to be able to work with high school age students and make learning about agriculture as fun for them as it was for me. I feel that participating in an internship through Disney would allow me to learn even more about agriculture and also teach me more people skills by meeting and working with new people from all over the world.

I plan to graduate with an agriculture education degree from NCSU. I may possibly continue school to recieve my master's degree before returning home or finding a teaching job. This experience would be beneficial to me in several ways. As I said before, I could learn many things from doing an internship. I would continue to learn about agriculture and possibly learn new techniques for things I have already learned. I would also be able to interact with many different people. This would teach me to how to interact with different students and it may also open of job opportunitys for me in the future.

Before the Career Expo I felt nervous. However, once I arrived I calmed down. I think that I appeared confident and interested to the recruiter. She was very open toward me and was very willing to talk with me. The only thing that I may fix for future opportunities is to have more questions prepared for the recruiter.

Although the recruiter was not completely familiar with my career area, she was able to answer most of my questions. She was pretty informative and she also was able to show me where to find information that she could not answer.

As far as hiring entry-level employees, Disney is not too picky. They ask that you are at least 18 years old and that you can show proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Some areas in the college program also require a certain GPA and possibly some other experience.

Overall I felt that this was a very good experience. It helped me to be better prepared in the future and I also learned things that I did not already know.
