Career Expo
The company that caught my eye during the 2009 Career Expo was PIC, Pig Improvement Company. During my conversation I was able to speak with Tony Thomas. As a freshman going to a career fair many representatives do not take you seriously and even though I was going for a class it still was a really good way to get out and see what kind of businesses are out there and what they are looking for. It was very discouraging when they would automatically tell you their company were not looking for freshman. My conversation with Mr Thomas was very good. I had no idea what kind of technology was going on in the swine industry. I really enjoyed talking to him because he didn't just look at you as a freshman but he looked at you like someone who could possibly be working with his company. When I approached him I wasn't very sure what to say so I was somewhat nervous about the whole situation. When I asked Mr Thomas about the internships that PIC provided to freshman, his response was that they don't really look at the year of school you're in they look at if you fit their company. During my conversation I was able to learn that PIC was offering six intern positions for summer 2010. Not only were they offering six positions but each one was in a different field. As Mr Thomas explained to me the what went into a internship there I was able to learn that you are given a problem in what ever area you have decided to go into and you have the resources you could think of and you try to solve the problem. Now, this doesn't just consist of sitting at a desk or in just one lab but, you can actually fly around and travel wherever you may need to go to get the answer you are looking for. When thinking about how this could further my career goals of becoming an agriculture educator I think about the Genetic Development Department of PIC. By having an internship with this department I could use all the resources to solve the problem, but along the way I could see all the different styles and procedures around the country. I believe that having a part in PIC's internship program would be a very rewarding experience in which I could gain valuable knowledge about the swine industry. I could then go back and share it with my future students in the classroom.
