Call to Action Reviewer: Adeia Nevels Speaker: Tanesha Topic: Volunteerism Tanesha talked about volunteering in her speech. She said that NC State should require all students to volunteer because it can help people to get in shape, open doors for a career, and improve the wellbeing of others. She also mentioned volunteerism on a global level through CSLEPS? abroad service programs. Tanesha proposed a service plan where students receive school hours, book vouchers, and are even eligible to win a new car by volunteering at a local soup kitchen, the Boys & Girls Club, etc. These rewards would definitely get more people to put aside time to serve others and really got the attention of her audience. Call to Action Reviewer: Adeia Nevels Speaker: Audi Topic: Capital Punishment In Audi?s speech, he talked about capital punishment and a march on campus that would get the attention of the city of Raleigh, as well as the state of North Carolina. Participants in Audi?s march would wear signs, which he modeled for the class. His signs were a creative and unique visual that grabbed everyone?s attention. Audi handed out itineraries of the day?s events, which included free food, speeches, and much more. Although Audi?s speech was short, he definitely energized the audience and made everyone want to take action. Posted by amnevels ( Dec 09 2007, 10:23:42 PM EST ) Permalink Comments [0]

Self-Reflection: Call to Action Speaker: Adeia Nevels Topic: Boycott Chinese-made toys I am very satisfied with my performance on my Call to Action Speech about why Americans should boycott Chinese-made toys. I definitely illustrated a clear need for such actions to be taken through convincing quotes and statistics. In my speech, I mentioned a boycott rally, which is a specific way to get our opinion across to toy-makers and retailers. Because I know that most people will be out of the city for the holidays, I also reminded everyone that they are capable of boycotting Chinese-made toys from wherever they are during winter break. This gave the audience a good sense of how they can help the cause. I told the audience that even though the boycott rally is on Christmas Eve, everyone should participate regardless of their religious beliefs. Safety is the top priority in my speech and every child deserves safe toys. The feedback from my audience was definitely positive after making such a statement. Mentioning to the audience that every child should have safe toys made them want to take action. We were all children once and understand how wonderful it is to have a special toy to play with. I did feel that my style energized the audience because I began by listing great things that will soon happen. I mentioned finals, which marks the end of the semester, as well as the holidays and the end of the year. These events got the audience interested in what I had to say next. I do believe that I could have been a bit more animated throughout my speech to continuously have the audience?s attention. Overall though, I am very happy with how my speech turned out. Speaker: Kristin Freeman

Kristin's speech on Obesity defines clear problems and then states possible solutions to the problems. She uses a persuasive strategy by giving appealing reasons why you shouldn't be obese. In her speech when she stated, "I want you to help lower the percentage of obese people in the world," I was compelled to take action. Kristin's over all use of linguistic strategies was great due to the clarity of her speech and the over all rhythm of it. Finally even though the class was half asleep due to the early class time, Kristin energized them with her moving speech. All in all this was a great speech.

Speaker: Andrew D. Hancock

In my speech on why you should by a Toyota Tundra I stated that after your purchase of the vehicle the crime rate in your area would be lowered.  My actions in my speech were very specific and the audience knew exactly what they had to do to fix my problem.  I think that even though my persuasive strategy was slightly comical it got the message across.  My linguistic strategy was okay, I think in this portion of a speech everyone can always improve.  After my speech was over I receive a slight bit of laughter, which I perceived as an energized and engaged audience.  In my opinion I think this was my best speech.

Speaker: Alex

I think that Alex did a good job on her speech. She restated her points from her last speech but I think she was a little nervous in her delivery in the beginning of her speech. She stated the amount of children that become smokers and that the tax on cigarettes should be raised. I think that she stated everything in a great way and she got that motivation across.

Alex's entire speech showed her support of raising the taxes and it really showed. There seemed to be passion in her topic and that made everyone pay attention to the facts of her speech.

Speaker: Shakira

Shakira did an excellent job on her speech about company relocation. She was against companies moving from the United States to foreign countries. I think that the speech was well organized and she stated her points again. She did a wonderful job of reviewing her previous speech and letting us know more details of why we support not wanting companies to relocate.

Shakira made a valuable point when she stated that Americans should not have to move overseas to live a comfortable life. Company relocation causes a raise in taxes and Shakira stressed the fact that company relocation is not an advantage for the citizens of the United States.

Call to Action Speech Self Reflection
Speaker: Jessica Dean
Topic: Biodiesel

I think I did a good job with this speech. I illustrated a need for action by telling how the emissions from petroleum-based diesel affects children's health. I proposed very specfic actions that included writing a letter to the school board, protesting outside of the school board, and attending a school board meeting. I think the audience could understand what needed to be done and how to do it. My main persuasive strategy was to pull on their emotions and make them think about all the children that are being harmed by school buses. I might could have used a few other strategies to help me, but I think this worked ok.My favorite phrase was "Think of your own children." I really think that this was an important phrase because it made the issue hit close to home. What if this was my child getting sick? Would I do something if this was affecting my life? I believe my weakness in this speech was my delivery style. Instead of being "energizing" I think I made the audience more thoughtful. They were aware of the issue, but I do not think I convinced anyone that my action was worth the time. To make this better, I could have been used more emotions, such as anger, to promote the audience to follow me to the school board. I also could have talked faster, since I think that I might have been taking it a bit too slowly. Overall, I feel like this was a good speech, but not as good as my last one.

Call to Action Speech
Reviewer: Jessica Dean
Speaker: David
Topic: Skin Cancer

David's call to action speech addressed reducing your risk of getting skin cancer. He showed that something needed to be done because 1,000,000 people get skin cancer every year and 10,580 die from it every year. He also said that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. The specific actions that David said we should do are put on sunscreen, wear hats, wear long clothing, avoid long periods of time in the sun, and see a dermatologist at least once a year. A phrase he used that struck me as important was "Because the ozone is depleting... it won't get better naturally, so we must protect ourselves." This makes the situation seem more dire because only we can protect ourselves from skin cancer; no matter what other people are doing, only you can protect yourself.
I really liked David's speech and think he did a very good job.

Topic: Boycott Chinese Made Toys

Adeia gave information on chinese toys and convinced us that the toys did have lead in them. She wanted us to take action with her against the unsafe toys and protest at a local Toys R Us. She had information on the recalls over the past year from China. Her presentation was good and If I was gonna be here on the date of her boycott I would come out. Good Job with eye contact and confidence in her speech.

Call to Action Speech
Reviewer: Jessica Dean
Speaker: Blaire
Topic: Abolishing the Electoral College

In Blaire's call to action speech, she addressed the issue of the Electoral College and what we as college students can do to fix it. She illustrated that there is a clear need for action b discussing the Gore vs. Bush election and how the popular vote and the electoral vote did not match. She also talked about absentee ballots and how they do not count toward the electoral college. Her plan of action was that on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 she would lead a march to Washington to protest the electoral college. Her itenerary had a day full of action, but she did not mention any of these specific actions in her speech. She used two phrases that made me feel like moving into action. One was that abolishing the electoral college would make "us, the individuals, count." It clearly shows that by doing this action, it will help you in the long run. She also said " it's not as hard as you think." This puts he action into perspectie and makes it a more attainable goal.
Overall, I think Blaire did very well with her speech and I think she chose a very interesting topic.

Self-Reflection Call to Action Speech

James Boykin
Animal Welfare Speech

In this speech I recapped the issues dealing with animal ethics that exist today. I then went over several ways the audeince could help to reduce these problems. On the positive side I believe I demonstrated a clear need to take action by explaining some numbers and statistics. I also made it pretty clear what I wanted the audience to do, the easiest being educate themselves more on their own time such as watching a documentary. Some of the things I did not improve as much as I would have liked would be reducing anxiousness. I felt like I could have connected to the audience much better had I not been so nervous while speaking. While I did experience less nervousness then the first speech, I still see it would take it least several more events before I would start to feel comfortable speaking in front of groups that I don't know very well. As far as linguistic strategies I feel like I spoke pretty clear though took to many pauses throughout the speech.

Call to Action Speech
Speaker: Adrian
Reviewer: Blaire Davidowitz
Topic: War on Terror

Today, Adrian spoke to his audience in his Call to Action Speech about the negatives on the War on Terror. He started his speech of asking the audience if they knew anyone that was serving in the war right now. He then went on to say that he had relatives fighting and had not seen them in a very long time, since the war started. This use of persuasive strategy did move me and the audience as well. I felt bad for him and angry that the war would bring this about not only on Adrian but other families as well. After this introduction, Adrian illustrated a few very clear needs for action on his topic. He explained that the war is killing people, over 3000 so far and wounded over 20,000 people as well. He also stated that the war was one of personal gain and preemptive too.

After spending time talking about the need for this war to end, Adrian gave us a really cool way to take action and stop the war. Adrian gave everyone in the audience a registration paper to vote in the upcoming presidential election. He told us that we could choose a candidate that will make a difference in the war and also vote for a Congress as well. He even gave us the three candidates, Clinton, Obama, and Edwards, who could make this happen. I thought that this action was very need. He made registration very easy for us and if I had not already been registered I probably would have done it then and there. I only wish he would have given the audience an address to send it to so that we could get our registration card.

Finally, Adrian used persuasive techniques to the best of his ability to move the audience. As stated above, Adrian mentioned how he has not seen members of his family in a very long time. This, along with the statistics, helped to move the audience into taking action.

Overall, Adrian did a great job with his speech. He knew his facts and presented them perfectly. The only real weakness that I can see is that he spent a little too much time on his need step. He could have narrowed it down a bit since the audience was already on his side and he was only supposed to be strengthening commitment, not persuading us. But, besides this, the speech was very enjoyable to listen to.

Call To Action

Call to Action Speech
Speaker: David
Reviewer: Blaire Davidowitz
Topic: Skin Cancer

David did an excellent job with his speech about skin cancer. As one would probably expect, he was not in favor of the cancer and not only illustrated how important it was to do something about the skin cancer, but also had very good actions that could be taken to avoid it in the first place. David started his speech of stating the need for putting an end to skin cancer. David stated that over one million people get skin cancer in a year. Besides this, it is the most common cancer and shockingly enough it can effect anyone, especially kids and those with fair skin. Also, David let the audience know that one in five Americans may develop skin cancer sometime in their lives. These shocking numbers truly did motivate the audience to take action against developing skin cancer.

Once this need was made clear, David went on to provide specific actions that the audience could take to defer and hopefully prevent skin cancer in the long run. For this action, David handed out a small piece of paper giving pretty specific actions for the audience to take in order to help themselves against the skin cancer. Some of these actions consisted of using sunscreen, wearing hats and long clothing, and going to see a dermatologist once a year. The actions are actually very reasonable and there is a good chance that the audience will actually practice these actions, as opposed to other actions from speakers that were a little more farfetched.

Finally, David used persuasive strategies and evidence to move his audience. As stated above, the numbers David gave in his need step truly did hit the audience on more of a personal level. Skin cancer seemed so much easier to get once I learned of these horrifying statistics. The fact that I may die if I do not protect myself from the sun truly did move me, and I?m sure that it did the same for many others as well.

David did a great job with his speech. His only weaknesses were that he tended to read off of his facts. I wish that he had known them a little better; this would have made him more credible. But, he stuck to the time limit and had great facts and preventions of skin cancer for his audience. Overall, this speech achieved its purpose.

Peer Review

Call to Action Speech
Speaker: James
Reviewer: Morgan Parks
Topic: Animal welfare

James did a good job at recapping and refreshing his audience on what he covered in his last speech. He also provided facts to help bring around the point that action needs to be taken such as over 9 million cats and dogs are euthanized, over 15 million are used for testing, and that many of the 10 billion animals we eat are caged for their entire life.
James proposed two actions an indirect and direct one. The direct course of action he proposed was to have all your pets spayed and neutered, and to adopt your pets instead of buying them since most pets that are turned into the shelter are turned in by their owners. He also proposed the indirect method of watching where your money went. He stated that if you pay for it it is the same as killing it. He said that we need to reduce the amount of animal meat we consume, because we don't need as much as we ingest any way. He proposed attainable solutions to the problem that we as an audience could implement every day. James was straight forward and direct and simple to attain on the audiences part.
