Thursday February 28, 2008 Please bring a real calculator to the exam. You need one of these for the ARB, so you should get one now and get used to it. I do not allow you to use cell phones or any other handheld devices other than non-programmable calculators of the type approved for standard tests. The campus book store and many other stores have these readily available for about $10. If you are not sure that your calculator is acceptable, please send me a message with the name and model number and I will let you know.
Thanks
Chuck
One of your classmates found two clerical errors in the homework answer. I use the word "clerical" because they are typos and do not affect the answer. Full explanation of them is on the revised answer here, but the short version is that I wrote the time down wrong on the heat loss heat gain sheet but used the right Solar Factors, and I wrote down the wrong slab edge U value on the worksheet page 1 but used the correct value on the heat loss heat gain sheet.
The correct time is 2 PM and the correct slab edge U value is 0.3 (see page 11 of the trost book).
Send me an email if this is not clear to you.
BRING A CALCULATOR TO THE EXAM
Chuck
I have now posted all of the energy and hvac lectures, which include all of the material that will be covered on the first exam. That exam will be given next Wednesday at the regular class time. Brittani will give a review on Monday for the exam - if you have questions that she cannot answer, please post them as a comment to this blog entry or send my an email.
See you on Wednesday
Chuck
I have uploaded the answer to the homework problem. If you go to the hvac page, you will find a link to the problem and a separate link to the answer. The rest of the hvac lectures are also posted on that page.
If, after you review this material, you still have a question, either post it as a comment for this
blog entry or write me an email. Please do post your question if you think that other students
may have a similar question (post anonymously if you wish). Note: you may only post comments to my posts, not new posts.
Finally, I am certainly not perfect and I have probably made a mistake or two. If you think you
have found a mistake, either write me or post as a blog comment.
Thanks
Chuck
I am sorry but for ARC-414, we have to postpone the field trip. Please report to Burns Auditorium at the normal time today. We will have the field trip at a later date.
Thanks
Chuck
I have had samples of the last two years' projects placed on the ARC414 reserve shelf in the Design Library. The projects have been revised somewhat over the years (particularly the Case Study) but they should give you a good idea of the graphic standards and level of detail that we are looking for. These folders cannot be removed from the library, but feel free to make copies if you need them for a team meeting.

I have posted the HVAC homework problem. If you want to save the problem for extra credit for the upcoming test, please do the problem neatly and show your assumptions and extra calculations on a separate sheet and then turn all of it in when I ask for it in class.
I also posted the last two HVAC lectures. Follow the course web page link on the right.
I hope you enjoy our guest lecturer, Mark Williard, AIA, on Wednesday.
I'll see you again on Friday.
Chuck
I have posted the Energy lectures on the web site for you to download. They are in Powerpoint format, but I wrote some of them in iWork 08, so if you want the iWork (Keynote) version, please let me know.
I also posted a revision to the calendar since we are about a day behind on the lectures.
You can go directly to the course home page by following the link on the right side of this page.
See you later this morning
Chuck
I have put up our class web site. You can access it at:

There is also a link to this page from courses.ncsu.edu/arc414.
We also have a message board:

Please bookmark these locations.
See you soon
Chuck
The homework problem is here. I have not updated it since I posted it, so if you downloaded it already there is no need to download it again. If you do the problem on the heat loss / heat gain sheet and show your work on separate page, I will give you partial credit towards the last test grade, up to 15 points. You may turn the completed work in to me (not Brittani) anytime from now until the Wednesday following spring break (March 12th). If you have completed this work already please turn it in tomorrow and I will grade it during the break. Please write to me if you have any questions about this.
