CDs for Projects

Some of you need the systems projects and case studies back to make the required CD of the work. You have two options:

1. Do not turn in a CD. I subtract one point from each project or case study for a missing CD. This will lower the maximum score for either to 24. Each point for a project or case study counts 1% on your final average.

2. Send me an email requesting that you get your project and/or case study back. If I have time before I post the grades, I will let you pick up the projects at my office and return the CD there. I will try to have the projects and case studies available on Monday morning, May 5th. You must have the CD back to me before I post the grades. The deadline for posting grades is Wednesday, May 7th during the work day, so I will post the grades on Tuesday night. Therefore, you must have the CD to me by Tuesday, May 6th, at 5pm.

Also, if you want your project or case study returned to you, please let me know and I will bring it to my office for you to pick up next week.

Class Evaluations

Please remember to go to https://classeval.ncsu.edu and complete your class evaluations. I know you all are getting lots of email about this, but it really is important. As of this morning, eight of you have completed evaluations for ARC-414. For the evaluations to be statistically significant, at least 50% of the class needs to complete the evaluations (for ARC-414, that means 28 students at least). As I said before, we use the input from these evaluations to improve the course. Please complete your evaluation for this and your other classes by the deadline, which is Monday, April 28th.

Thanks
See you later this morning

Class location has changed

The location for the rest of the lectures starting today and including the final exam has changed from the Burns Auditorium to Brooks 320. This change is due to the chiller replacement in Kamphoefner hall.

See you later this morning.

All lighting lectures posted

I have posted all of the lighting lectures, including a "daylighting wrap-up" presentation. Please look at that presentation because a question from the upcoming exam will be based on it.

Please remember to bring your calculator to the exam on Monday.

I hope you enjoy Dr. Place's lecture on Wednesday.

See you next week

New calendar posted

I have updated the calendar to show the daylighting lecture, which will be given by Dr. Place on Wednesday the 26th of March at the normal time. Unfortunately, I will also have to postpone the field trip once again. We will try to conduct the field trip sometime in April. In the meantime, you may use Monday the 24th of March as a group work day to work on your projects.

The new calendar (revision 5) is posted on the web site.

See you tomorrow

Lighting lectures and homework posted

I have posted the lighting lectures that I have given so far to the web site. I have also posted the lighting homework problem. This problem, which will be covered in tomorrow's lecture, is very similar to a problem that will be on the next exam. I will also accept your solution to this problem for extra credit after the next exam.

See you tomorrow

HVAC homework due date

The homework problem is here. I have not updated it since I posted it, so if you downloaded it already there is no need to download it again. If you do the problem on the heat loss / heat gain sheet and show your work on  separate page, I will give you partial credit towards the last test grade, up to 15 points. You may turn the completed work in to me (not Brittani) anytime from now until the Wednesday following spring break (March 12th). If you have completed this work already please turn it in tomorrow and I will grade it during the break. Please write to me if you have any questions about this.

See you in class tomorrow.

BRING A CALCULATOR TO THE EXAM

Please bring a real calculator to the exam. You need one of these for the ARB, so you should get one now and get used to it. I do not allow you to use cell phones or any other handheld devices other than non-programmable calculators of the type approved for standard tests. The campus book store and many other stores have these readily available for about $10. If you are not sure that your calculator is acceptable, please send me a message with the name and model number and I will let you know.

Thanks

Minor revision to homework answer posted

One of your classmates found two clerical errors in the homework answer. I use the word "clerical" because they are typos and do not affect the answer. Full explanation of them is on the revised answer here, but the short version is that I wrote the time down wrong on the heat loss heat gain sheet but used the right Solar Factors, and I wrote down the wrong slab edge U value on the worksheet page 1 but used the correct value on the heat loss heat gain sheet.

The correct time is 2 PM and the correct slab edge U value is 0.3 (see page 11 of the trost book).

Send me an email if this is not clear to you.

All lectures posted for Exam I

I have now posted all of the energy and hvac lectures, which include all of the material that will be covered on the first exam. That exam will be given next Wednesday at the regular class time. Brittani will give a review on Monday for the exam - if you have questions that she cannot answer, please post them as a comment to this blog entry or send my an email.

See you on Wednesday

Homework Answer Available on Web Site

I have uploaded the answer to the homework problem. If you go to the hvac page, you will find a link to the problem and a separate link to the answer. The rest of the hvac lectures are also posted on that page.

If, after you review this material, you still have a question, either post it as a comment for this
blog entry or write me an email. Please do post your question if you think that other students
may have a similar question (post anonymously if you wish). Note: you may only post comments to my posts, not new posts.

Finally, I am certainly not perfect and I have probably made a mistake or two. If you think you
have found a mistake, either write me or post as a blog comment.

Thanks

Projects from past years now on reserve shelf

I have had samples of the last two years' projects placed on the ARC414 reserve shelf in the Design Library. The projects have been revised somewhat over the years (particularly the Case Study) but they should give you a good idea of the graphic standards and level of detail that we are looking for. These folders cannot be removed from the library, but feel free to make copies if you need them for a team meeting.
