Kerrie Fersch's Peer Review

Speaker: Jenna

Jenna’s call to action speech was about young girls being manipulated by the media, mainly TV, into thinking that they have a poor body image. She had a really good introduction and clearly stated her main points. I completely agree that TV stations need to censor programs and commercials by not showing “stick thin” models. Jenna gave good statistics such as stating how a model weighs a good percentage less than the average woman and how there are a rise in eating disorders due to what the media presents. She gives examples of how girls can get help by talking about the support group Body Wise. She then explained about how by censoring violence on TV made a difference, that censoring extremely skinny women should also make a difference. By making this comparison, it helps the audience to relate this situation to something that they already know about. I like her idea about of coming together July 20th at 3:00pm on Western Boulevard at WRAL to petition against showing “stick thin” models. Although she had a lot of knowledge for the subject, she needed a bit more eye contact and perhaps a larger, clearer visual aid. She also (a bit like myself) didn’t have any handouts and perhaps she needed a bit more hand gestures and needed to speak a bit slower. However overall I thought Jenna’s call to action speech was really well put together. Posted by kefersch ( Apr 25 2008, 08:19:04 PM EDT ) Permalink Comments [0]

Speaker: Patrick

Patrick’s call to action speech was about illegal immigrants. He had a clear attention getting device and he clearly states his main points. He explains his examples well about how illegal immigrants hurt our economy. Patrick also presented a good amount of information such as how the majority of illegal immigrants are coming from Mexico and Canada and how there are currently 12 million illegal immigrants. He presents a few good solutions to solving this problem such as building a wall, strengthening laws that are already present and increasing border control. He had a really good idea by using postcards as handouts. People could state how they feel about illegal immigration by sending these postcards to Congress. I liked how Patrick had an ultimate goal of having 1 million people across the nation to send in their postcards. I thought that overall Patrick had a very well put together and clear call to action speech. Posted by kefersch ( Apr 25 2008, 08:18:31 PM EDT ) Permalink Comments [0]
Self-Reflection for Patrick My topic on illegal immigrants, allowed me to give a clear understanding of my action on my topic. I said that we needed to send a post card to the US capital building describing our feeling about illegal immigration. I believe my audience had a great sense of what I was trying to accomplish. I used a couple persuasive strategies but I should have given a little more background information. I said things such as, "come on everyone" and "join me in this protest" that got the audience to hear my word and take action with me. I did not use linguistic strategies as well as I should have. I should have spoken a little more clear and had more phrases and words to make the audience what to take action. I believe that my style did energize the audience because I did not just stand up there and talk. I changed the tone in my voice and I tried to aware everyone in the class. Overall, I believe I gave a pretty good call to action speech. Posted by pjstultz ( Apr 25 2008, 07:17:04 PM EDT ) Permalink Comments [0]
Peer Review for Stephanie's Call to Action Reviewer: Patrick Person Reviewed: Stephanie Topic: College Tuition Stephanie started out her speech with an introduction that described exactly what she wanted to accomplish in her speech. She said that it was hard to get a well paying job with out a college degree. It is hard for most families to afford sending their children to college with the tuition prices being what they are now. It has become a problem for everyone. She wanted everyone to join her to protest to decrease college tuition. She asked everyone to write a letter to governor Easley. She wanted everyone to express their feelings on how they feel about the college tuition prices now. From April 21-25, she wants everyone to protest this issue. In conclusion, she said "think of everyone, not just yourselves." She also believed that others would join the protest once it got started. Stephanie Crank's Call to Action Peer Review for Jenna Jenna did good. I enjoyed her speech. She gave a lot of good facts that I never paid attention too. He attention getting device was good. I like her topic, "television stations should sensor what they show on tv."
I agree with the fact that the image that tv show as far as the perfect size for a woman should be is having a negative imapct on our young, teenage girls. She gave some important details like how models shown on tv makes girls feel as if they should be that way, cause servere eating disorders. She gave a good comparison between a model size and the average female size. I also like how she told how the dieting trend has been on the rise for the past 3 decades due to whats shown on television. She told us that we should go to WRAL and petition the perfectionate images shown on television but she really didn't give us to much too go off of. I think that she should have had a handout that we could see and keep just in case we wanted to go to WRAL. Jenna also read straight from the paper, she was monotone, spoke quickly, and she was very passionate and emotional about her topic. Overall she could have done a lot better.

Stephanie Crank's Call to Action Peer Review for Kerrie Kerrie did well. I liked her attention getting device. It was good how she referred back to the final changes of the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. I think she was really passionate and showed a lot of emotion for her topic. At the same time she could have had a little more excitement. She articulated well and was very vivid in details. She had great main ideas. I liked how she defined the phrase "under God" from the pledge of Allegiance. She was very good at delivering the problem. She had a good idea about getting parents, students, and teachers to sign a petition to get the court to stop their assault on the Pledge. She was very clear in letting us know what the petition should state. I think she could have worked more on her posture. And the last thing that was missing from the speech was the handouts. Most people were looking for handouts so they could have more information about the petition for the pledge. Not having a handout for her peers took away from the overall speech. But overall she did very good and I enjoyed it. Posted by sycrank ( Apr 25 2008, 04:47:17 PM EDT ) Permalink Comments [0]
Carla - Stephanie Crank's peer review Stephanies speech seemed to be more informative which I personally like because a lot of people do not understand finances and how important it is. She could have been a bit more passionate when she spoke, but she made good eye contact which was great. She did use a lot of statistics which confused me. I felt that the call to action speech should be relayed in a emotional sense rather than anaylitical sense. She also seemed like she was nervous by skipping around. I liked her approach about writing the governor and providing information to the audience. It makes her look credible because she did the research on not only the information but also the statistics. Carla - Ross' peer review for Recycling Ross demonstrated a need for recycling. He had very good posture which was great, he looked like he was ready to speak and confident. I also felt like he was confident because he was very informative on the benefits of recyling.  He told us how it is wasteful and how it could potentially damage our enviornment. I liked his eye contact, because I for one though he was personable with the audience. He also used those pictures with lots of trash which I was shocked. I mean he made a good point with his visual aid which made the speech powerful. He was an eloquent speaker and was clear on all of his main points. I really liked this speech, and his call to action was very personable as well. Jenna Eubanks- Self Reflection I feel as though my call to action speech was not the best speech I had ever made. I beleive this because I had a lot less preparation time when working on this particular speech.  When making the speech I felt really unprepared and I know it must have shown in my enunciation and pronunciation of words within the speech. I also did not really feel comfortable looking away from my outline guide because I was scared that I would lose my place on the paper and get my words all scrambled together. However,  I did enjoy the last part of my speech when I told about the local television stations needing to be censored and that we could do something about it. I thought my idea for that was extremely clever and somewhat interesting because you know that you must start small in order to make big changes in the world. I beleive that this speech could have been a lot more interesting if I had of used more changes in my voice and had not have been so monotone when speaking. Although, overall I feel as though I did not do as well as I could have I still think that I produced a pretty decent speech. Ross Whitcher's Self Reflection I thought I was a little bit nervous while I was giving my speech and I think that was becuase I could have been better prepared. (I had a 6 page paper due right before the speech. Poor signing up on my part haha) But I thought I did well with not reading straight off my paper but at times I seemed to lose my place while I was speaking. In the end I think I got my point across and I would have effectively persuaded people to be active in their community when it comes to recycling and to join me in protest to get our voice heard about more recycling curbside pick ups in our neighborhoods. Self Reflection Call to action Evan Dooley I feel that this call to action speech was the best speech I came up with, out of all the others before. That could be becasue this one was a little more organized, so I felt a little more comfortable about what I was talking about. My eye contact was okay, but I definetly felt I could have done a better job with that. My rhythm could have been  a little off at times, but for the most part I felt that it was preety smooth. I feel that I've gotten better with not saying um and using other verbal pauses as much as I did in the beginning of the semester. Overall I feel more comfortable speaking in front of an audience than I did in the beginning of this semester.

Topic: The punishment for child abuse should be more strict.

I thought her attention grabber was pretty good. At times she read off her cards too much so I think she could have practiced her speech a little bit better so she would know what she was going to say ahead of time. She had good body posture which lead to her having good vocality. She had very strong points and examples which really grabbed my attention. I thoguht it was good that she repeated "Jessica's Law" multiple times throughout the speech to help us remember the name of it and show it's importance. I thought her solution to the problem was really good too especially with the "media coverage".

Topic: Nutrition Data should be posted in  restaurant's menus

I thought her attention grabber was very clear. It was easy to understand and did grab my attention. Her structure/ layout of her speech was very clear as well and easy to follow. She had good vocality with respect to pitch, volume and her tone. She had good body posture but at times she rested on her hip or on the table in the front of the classroom. She had good vocal pauses. Jessica looked very calm and looked natural while giving her speech. At one point in the end she pronounced meal bill as "mil bill" which she could have used better articulation. Overall her speech was very good and clearly got her point across and honestly got me interested in joining the fight to get the nutrition data put in menus.

Self Reflection Evan Dooley I feel that my persuasive speech could have been better if I was better organized before the day of the speech. Although I feel that I made some very good points to why stem cells would be a major benefactor to the world. I think this was one of the more difficult speechs because of the length. Besides that I could have been spoke a little more clear and not stumble as much. I also thought I could have moved a little more to make it seem as if I were comfortable to make the audience more comfortable. Last of all I feel I could of done a lot better with my eye contact to keep the audience engaged.

Peer Review Name of Speaker: Zac

Name of Reviewer: Evan Dooley

Zac usually always speaks clear and this time was no different. His topic was very clear. He basically was asking everyone to save energy or use renewable energy. He gave us a few reasons to why we should use renewable energy or to why we should save energy. He was explaining that the earth cannot keep up with our compacity of energy especially if we don't make any efforts to save it. He was very clear and the rhythm of his speech was very smooth. He also used his hands well. His energy was very positive and made it very believeable to how we can help conserve energy to make the world better.
