Topic: Birth Control Info
I loved Kristin's topic. I felt that the issue she addressed was a realistic problem for people our age, therefore her topic was appropriate for her audience. She illustrated a very clear need for action. Kristin discussed that we should all be aware that birth control protects users from many problems they could face, and that is why we should promote birth control use. Kristin gave specific examples for the audience to do to make a change. First, she suggested we all e-mail our government and make them aware that we should advertise birth control options more. This solution was a little broad in my opinion, but it was still a good idea. She also said we should all get together and make fliers to reach students, because students are the ones who need to know the information the most. I really like that Kristin supplied us with statistics and numbers. Her examples included telling us that there were over 1000 teen pregnancies, and over 400 abortions followed these pregnancies. A phrase that really touched me was that this action would save our community and ourselves. Kristin also said that she was "asking us to join her..." and that this WAS a problem, and we cannot predict who will be affected". Kristin was pretty energetic during her speech and she seemed to really care about her topic.

Topic: Global Warming
I really enjoyed Sam's argument. In her speech, Sam made it clear that there is a serious need for us to take action to stop global warming. I really like the examples Sam gave in her speech. The examples and stories were relatable and realistic to the audience. Giving examples of how this problem effects us made the audience understand the serious nature of this issue. Sam also gave greta specific actions to stop global warming. She persuaded the audience to learn more about the topic so that we could help spread the world. She also explained the small individual actions we could do to help. Sam's main action she presented us with was a virtual petition. I really thought this idea was original and realistic! She also let us know that there were many people who were already active on this site, making the site seem popular. Things Sam said that stuck in my mind were, "Join me..." and letting us know all these action are easy for us to do. Although the topics were great, I think Sam could have been a little bit more enthusiastic about her topic. She spoke with a dry tone and she didnt really speak clear. She also read off her paper most of the time.

Jennas call to action speech was about young girls being manipulated by the media, mainly TV, into thinking that they have a poor body image. She had a really good introduction and clearly stated her main points. I completely agree that TV stations need to censor programs and commercials by not showing stick thin models. Jenna gave good statistics such as stating how a model weighs a good percentage less than the average woman and how there are a rise in eating disorders due to what the media presents. She gives examples of how girls can get help by talking about the support group Body Wise. She then explained about how by censoring violence on TV made a difference, that censoring extremely skinny women should also make a difference. By making this comparison, it helps the audience to relate this situation to something that they already know about. I like her idea about of coming together July 20th at 3:00pm on Western Boulevard at WRAL to petition against showing stick thin models. Although she had a lot of knowledge for the subject, she needed a bit more eye contact and perhaps a larger, clearer visual aid. She also (a bit like myself) didnt have any handouts and perhaps she needed a bit more hand gestures and needed to speak a bit slower. However overall I thought Jennas call to action speech was really well put together. Posted by kefersch ( Apr 25 2008, 08:19:04 PM EDT ) Permalink Comments [0]Speaker: Patrick
Patricks call to action speech was about illegal immigrants. He had a clear attention getting device and he clearly states his main points. He explains his examples well about how illegal immigrants hurt our economy. Patrick also presented a good amount of information such as how the majority of illegal immigrants are coming from Mexico and Canada and how there are currently 12 million illegal immigrants. He presents a few good solutions to solving this problem such as building a wall, strengthening laws that are already present and increasing border control. He had a really good idea by using postcards as handouts. People could state how they feel about illegal immigration by sending these postcards to Congress. I liked how Patrick had an ultimate goal of having 1 million people across the nation to send in their postcards. I thought that overall Patrick had a very well put together and clear call to action speech. Posted by kefersch ( Apr 25 2008, 08:18:31 PM EDT ) Permalink Comments [0]
Call to Action Speech Self Reflection- Support American-made Products
Meaghan Lynch
I had mixed feelings about the turn-out of my call to action speech. I think I really improved my memorization of my speech compared tot he last speech I gave. I did not use my outline for this speech, instead I just made notes to myself on notecards. I think this worked a lot better. I forgot where I was in my speech a few times and I noticed that I stumbled a little. But overall, I think I ran through my speech okay. The information I provided went well with my speech's purpose. I think the examples I gave were really great. I provided statistics and specific instanceswhen it was harmful for the US to rely on other countries. I think my handouts were catchy and stood out to the audience. The action I suggested be done to solve the problem I discussed was realistic and very easy to be done. It was simply an individual effort to stop supporting Foreign-made goods.
