CALS CAREER EXPO

The organization that I approached at the Career Expo was the USDA-National Statistics Service. I was a little hesitant about approaching people at the booths. When I finally talked to the representative, she was very courteous and interesting. The display had a good amount of information and she also provided me with informational pamphlets.

There were various internships as well as scholarships that attracted my interest. The representative provided me with a small book that gave information about how to apply to for internships, employment, and as well as some helpful hints about USDA programs. I would be very interested in applying for one of the internships or summer employment with the USDA. The USDA has many relationships to my career goals and I know that pretty much any program would help me reach my goals. I am pursuing a career in veterinary medicine and veterinary services are very extensive in the USDA.

My conversation was in my opinion very productive. The recruiter enlightened me of some of the opportunities that I should find more information about. She informed me of some websites that I should look up and to help me meet my career goals. She also gave me a card so that I would have some one to contact for further help.

As for employment the recruiter gave me more information in pamphlet form. But she did tell me that they were looking for people that want to work. They want employees that will be dedicated to their work. She also said getting an internship with the USDA would really help in employment with them in the future.

Overall the USDA- National Statistics Service booth at the Career Expo was very interesting. I think that information that the recruiter provided me with will help in my future goals. I think that an internship with the USDA would increase my chance of being accepted into the North Carolina State Veterinary School. I really appreciated her information and teh opportuntiy to learn abou the programs. I am glad that I was able to participate in the CALS Career Expo. So I am strongly considering applying for an internship or a summer job with the USDA.

Tuesdays with Morrie:Mitch Albom ~Values~

Basically values are the bylaws of a person?s life. Values can be created, discarded, and altered but ultimately they should be upheld by their creator. Values vary among people and whether they are good or bad they affect others. Overall I felt that all Mitch Albom?s values revolved around people and their interactions. He spoke about the importance forgiveness, the unimportance of possessions, and the influence one can have on another.

Personally I really took the values that Mitch Albom introduced to heart, especially his thoughts on forgiveness. Many people hold grudges and when that person is gone they regret not spend time or resolving the issue. More often than not the grudge is over some petty conflict and half the time no one even remembers how the conflict started. Mr. Albom also mentioned forgiving oneself which is also important. To me he was stating that you should just learn and move on. For example during my high school career of course not all of my grades were spectacular. I used to get a little depressed and finally I just had to say its ok, just work harder and do better next time. Dwelling and being mad at oneself does not improve the situation, nor does it alter the past.

Sadly our society is based on status and what a person owns which brings me to another value of Mr. Albom. Mr. Albom mentioned the short term gratification of possessions and the long term gratification of human interaction. New and improved methods of entertainment are constantly being produced but a kind word or act of compassion will never change. Mr. Albom presented the idea that the gratitude of giving last much longer than the gratitude received from a possession. Making friendships and having companionship last longer than the happiness of a new television.

Although people do not believe they influence others, they most certainly do. Mr. Albom mentioned how Morrie was able to make every person he talked to feel special. Every person should feel special and the smallest action can reach that goal. Just being an attentive listener can make another person feel important and being that kind of an influence is satisfying. Putting a person down and just making oneself feel good will never measure up to the win-win situation of complimenting another.

Due to the values of others, I do not think my values will change for the better if they do change. Competition is considerably significant on a college campus therefore many people center everything on themselves. Many people do not take into account how their actions will affect others, just how they will benefit themselves. I do not want to be that type of person so hopefully it will not affect me. I try to be considerate of others as well as look out for myself. In the end I do not want to be self consumed and end up missing out on an experience just because the experience was not beneficial.
