Judicial activism vs. judicial restraint

Yesterday in class, we discussed about judicial activism vs. judicial restraint.  These two philosophies interpret the US constitutions in opposing way.  Judicial activism means the action of judges that go beyond the established law and constitution by government institutions in order to fit individual or societal needs.  On the other hand, judicial restraint is the strict follow up of the law and constitutions established by government institutions such as congress.  In judicial activism, judges can make policy of their own if they found it necessary but in judicial restrain judges can not make policy of their own that goes beyond the law and constitution.  The following website contains an interesting news on Republican's support for judicial restraint and Democrat's support for judicial activism:
