Results

In comparison to Perl, Sommers, and Berkenkotter's findings mine were most similar to Sommers' unskilled college writers. She said they mostly focused on single word revision and sometimes sentences. This is similiar to my findings because I had much more editing of single words rather than revising of content. I typically leave the revising portion for a second or third draft.

Bartholomae

The  quote is about how make yourself the best writer you can.  A student is writing for other scholary writers so the student can not be naive when trying to write.  They have to know who they are writing for and try to think in their mind, as if you know what the reader wants to hear.  I feel like the quote makes sense to me now because I have had to put myself in the same situation.  I have to think about what i'm writing and the audience I am writing for.

Response to "Bartholomae"

I would have to agree with this statement. I knew coming into this class that I had to cater to an audience, especially depending on the teacher. But I do think this class has changed me in the way that I now actually focus on certain audiences. I had never thought of a paper in that way before. I either wrote to the teacher or to a friend, and now it is about writing to specific disciplines and I have found that this changes a lot of how I write.

I had very similar problems when I was writing. I was going back and forth trying to edit and revise my paper instead of just writing. I couldn't get into a rythm at all because I never really finished my thoughts before I tried to change them.

Response to Lauren's Bartholomae Quote Post

I have to agree on you with this. At the beginning of the semester, I understood the meaning of this quote and I understood that we had to write in a certain discourse based on our audience. At this point, I am even more aware of this quote's meaning, because we've had assignments in which the audience was unfamiliar to us yet we still  ]had to appeal to that particular discourse community.

response to Stephanies post

I was also very distracted while writing my paper. and that’s a really good point that the researchers didn't mention distraction at all. I find it hard to believe that even back in the day people didn't get even a little distracted while writing. They might not get as distracted as we do but I'm sure there was something that distracted them too.

Results

The results of my study were a lot different than those of Berkenkotter, Perl and Sommers in that I had much more revision than their studies had shown. I think that’s because today, due to study like there, revision is stressed much more often. My results compared to Berkenkotter’s are as follows:

Revision                              25%                        3%

                Planning                              23%                        45%

                Editing                                  17%                        24%

                Evalution                             20%                        28%

                Distraction                          15%                        0

As you can see my numbers are a lot different in the revision and planning portions which is due to the way the writing process is taught today.

Response to what Josh Posted

I agree with you here. My results were similar to yours in that I didn't spend too much time planning or revising. I would edit throughout the paper and once I was finished, I was finished.

Results comparison

In my results, I coded a lot more revision and evaluation compared to Perl’s and the students’ results in Sommers”. Their participants were fixed mainly on the editing process, where in my results, there was more emphasis on content. If  it were the beginning of the semester, I would’ve had the same results as the researchers, but I have learned to look at the content.

results

After the researchers said that the skilled writers would delete paragraphs and pages of their papers I expected that I would have less revision than they had, and I was right. I had a lot of planning before my paper and most of the changes in my paper are little things like punctuation and grammar mistakes like the researchers expected a college student would write.

Think Aloud Results

My results were more like Berkenkotter's study. In my transcription there was more planning, figuring out what belonged in my paper, than anything else. I had more editing, changing words and rephrasing, than revision. I even had more evaluation, questioning and rereading my paper, than revision.

My study compared to the other Researchers

When I began this study I thought that I would come up with the same conclusions as the previous researchers, but I didn't.  My transcrpit showed that I spent more time planning than revising my paper. During the process of writing, instead of waiting until the end to revisie my paper, I would edit during the process.  I had less evaluation, so it showed me that I needed to improve on.  It seemed like I spent most of my time being distracted and not focused on the paper which didn't come as a surprise to me, but I did notice that the researchers did not mention any of their writers being distracted throughout the writing process.

Results of the study

The results that I found were similar to the ones found in the other studies.  From looking at my research and the results I spent a lot of time planning and evaluating, which is what other college students seem to do as well.  I think that is because not many student writers have much experience with the whole revising process.

Results

I found that the results of my study resembled those results of inexperienced writers from the other studies. When i was writing i would always be editing my work as i went along and i noticed that just like the other studies said that when you do this it prevents you from getting into a rhythm. Most of the editing that i did was using different words or rearranging sentences. Also i did not really plan anything out as i went along. I just started writing and hoped things would come together once i started.

Bartholomae Quote

This quote means that you have to make sure your writing style is geared towards that of scholarly professors. To “learn the language”, a student writer must push themselves outside of their comfort zone to write a paper with the knowledge that a scholar will be reading it. I can now relate more to what Bartholomae is talking about. This semester I have pushed myself to write to the standards of a scholar although it was sometimes more difficult and foreign to me to do so.
