Assignments
In response to the previous post, I agree with all of their ideas. We are not supposed to give our opinion, only present the opinions of the authors of the interpretations. By just providing the information it allows the reader to form their own opinions. I also noticed that the introductions for both papers were very similar. The only thing I would add to the previous response is that the only difference between the two assignments is in the scholarly/popular assignment the two sources were written for two different audiences whereas the interpretations have the same audience. Posted at 12:22PM Oct 28, 2008 by Erica Arletta Morgan in General | COMPARING ASSIGNMENTS Our current assignment of comparing and contrasting the two interpretations is similar to the earlier assignment in that we are reporting information. We must not include our own opinions , just like in the earlier assignment, because we aren?t making an argument. We are simply informing the reader of the author(s)?s opinion on a particular subject and pointing out similarities and differences. Another similarity is that the introductions have to include the same types of things. These assignments are different in that the two interpretations of the short story are both scholarly, where as in the previous assignment, one was popular, and the other was scholarly. Also, in the earlier assignment, we were comparing the style of writing and in this assignment, we are comparing the authors? interpretive strategies Posted at 09:28AM Oct 28, 2008 by Tayla Cunningham in General | Comparaing Assignments
I think that this assignment is different than the others in that we are interpreting the short story as well as looking at other interpretations from others. This paper has the pontential to not have a wrong answer. This paper is also different in that the authors of the interpretations are trying to persuade the same audiences were as the other papers we have written were directed to different audiences. I also think that this paper will be more fun to write simply because we are finally getting into some literature and that?s what English is all about. Comparing the popular and scholarly sources has a lot on common with comparing the two artistic works. I think that the main thing that is common in the introduction. Both introductions state the articles name, briefly review the main points and have a thesis that points out the main comparisons of the articles. They are both comparison papers where we are not suppose to use our own opinion. The two types of papers are really different. The two articles for the artistic comparisons are different because the articles are going to be easier to understand because they won?t have as much scientific wording. I think this paper will be easier to write because i have already written a comparison paper. Posted at 09:23AM Oct 28, 2008 by Sarah Joyce Holzer in General | Comments[2] Assignments
The current assignment is similar to the previous paper because it is the same general idea: comparing and contrasting in an academic voice and without placing too much of one?s own opinion into it. The assignments are different in that the interpretations now are both scholarly instead of just one. In this assignment we are looking at how they interpret the short story differently, in the previous writing we were looking at how the overall structure of the paper was different. The current assignment is somewhat similar the compare and contrast scholarly and popular articles. We do have to analyze what the reviews of the short stories are talking about which discuss different points of view about the short story. This is similar to comparing and contrasting the popular and scholarly articles because both have different points of view. Even though we now deal with the fact that both articles have equal ground for assertiveness and validity because neither is considered inferior like the popular article when compared to the scholarly, I have found that there are mostly similarities in these assignments. Once again, we are asked to regurgitate someone else?s words, leaving the rare occasion where we add our own interpretation which only spans as far as saying where we have found meaningful differences in their texts. We are left no room for our own dissection of the actual text, which in my case happens to be ?A Rose for Emily?. But, where at least I knew very little on the subject of brain cognition when I did the other paper, now I feel I could do a good job of analyzing the actual text when given the chance. The current assignment is similar to the last one in that you are writing a paper comparing articles different people wrote. For both assignments the articles that are being compared are all written about the same topic or idea. One thing that is different is that in the previous assignment they the articles were both scientific in nature and had facts and experiments to go with them. In the current assignment the articles are people interpretations and opinions. So in the current assignment you are comparing people?s thoughts rather than scientific information. The difference between comparing and contrasting scholarly
articles to the current assignment of interpreting a short story is the types
of writing. Before we did a paper on
scientific information, the paper we are working now is more on the literature
aspect. There is a major difference
between the styles of writing. The
scientific articles were to give information; the short stories are more for an
entertainment/ leisure purpose. They are similar by the fact that we are comparing and contrasting the two. At the same time both papers need a intro and thesis. Posted at 09:17AM Oct 28, 2008 by Jacqueline Yanchocik in General | Assignments.
The assignment that our class currently has is to compare and contrast two interpretations of a short story. For my story, I had chosen The Swimmer by Cheever. We had an earlier assignment this year requiring us to compare and contrast a scholarly article and a popular article. This assignment, in my opinion, will go along the lines of the past one, and we will be comparing the interpretations themselves, how they differ, how they are similar, etc. In the popular and scholarly article we noted many differences like the tones, how information was organized, level of detail, etc. but for this assignment I think we will be comparing different facts because the two interpretations are the opinions of others and their thoughts on a story. Both of these assignments are a bit lengthy but I believe this assignment will be a bit easier for me. Posted at 09:17AM Oct 28, 2008 by Brandon Wade Hill in General | Lit Review vs Interpret Paper
It seems like were going to show what the authors of our two interpretations think just like we did in the literature review. Also just like we couldn?t use our opinion in the last paper we can?t use our interpretations in this paper. We are asked only to present the interpretations of the authors which we chose. Furthermore, it?s the same in length and will probably have a lot of the same organization. Differences? I?m not quite sure but I think this will be more of an exact paper. To explain I mean like we can say exactly what the author of our interpretations is trying to communicate unlike having to use words like suggests and seems in the last paper.

Interpretation Strategies
I think I understand all of them, but have a hard time picking out intentionalist interpretations. A pragmatic interpretation can be found in ?A Modest Proposal? where the author, using satire, proposes that we eat children in order to increase the standard of living, and get out of poverty. He is using this outrageous proposal to indicate flaws in society, so that audience members are then aware of these flaws. Posted at 09:33AM Oct 27, 2008 by Mohammad Moussa in General | Interpretation Strategies
The pragmatic strategy probably makes the most sense to me. For the most part art is meant to be interpreted and teach a lesson, such as the global warming art from the pictures of the free expression tunnel we looked at. The art was not there only to be a pretty picture on the wall, it was also used to warn/inform people of global warming. Granted, the global warming picture also used the mimetic and formalist strategies. The fact that the picture actually looked like the sun helped interpret the art with the mimetic strategy. In addition, the literal written words ?global warning? contribute to a formalist approach. Posted at 09:23AM Oct 27, 2008 by Logan Talley in General | Interpretive stratgies
Out of all the interpretive strategies, intentionalist is the one that I understand the best. An example of this could be seen in a painting or picture anywhere. The artist is able to pick what they want, and their art often reflects their life as a part of that. Culture is a way to differentiate ourselves from other groups of people, so the artists are able to open the audience up to what they believe in, and their way of life. The one that still does not make as much sense is mimetic. While it represents nature, it shows a lot of symbols and is supposed to represent something else. The reason why it is harder to find is because you have to find it in what you are reading or looking at. Posted at 09:23AM Oct 27, 2008 by Ashley Merrill in General | Interpretive Strat.
I seem to have a basic understanding of all the interpretive strategies. Pragmatic is communicating with the society about some issue, intentionalist is saying what the author was thinking or saying, formalist is just reading it straight from the text and mimetic examines how the art is symbolic. These are the definition we were given in class which made it a lot easy for me. Now I just have to remember.
Formalist looking specifically at what?s there. Expressivist is looking at the way an authors background affected their writing. Mimetic is how the text represents something. Posted at 09:23AM Oct 27, 2008 by Jordan M. Penley in General | |
