Thesis
I could possibly write a thesis about how both articles are looking for a deeper significance in why Emily acts the way she does because they both search for the answer and come up with different theories. Of course, Faulkner purposely leaves the times ambiguous, along with certain aspects of the plot, producing many ways in which interpretations can go, including different time lines. So both articles have been set up around taking the interpretation of Emily’s actions and surroundings to a deeper level to produce an explanation for her peculiar habits. Thesis: The two interpretations written by David Estes and Worth Harder of “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” are similar in that they compare the short story with other works of literature but have different methods of style and form for their comparisons. I don’t think that this thesis is heading in the right direction, because it should give me more material to work with and be able to write about, but I think that if I choose specific points of comparison and add them in the thesis it will be more precise. I do not have a thesis statement yet, but I do have a few ideas. The possible thesis for my paper would be about the similarities and differences between The Jilting and Granny Weatherall, and it’s relation to poems written by Emily Dickinson. While there are many similarities and differences the main idea is death affected both Dickson and Weatherall, and how their religious beliefs changed their emotions towards death. I have not come up with a thesis that I am completely sure about yet, but it will most likely incorporate something about how both of the papers use the same story to interpret the ideas differently as they compare The Swimmer to different stories. They both allude to other stories as a way to compare the ideas of Cheever to those of other authors such as Fitzgerald. There are more differences than similarities between the two articles because they use the same style but have completely different ideas on how they compared The Swimmer to the other stories. I am having trouble with coming up with an effective thesis statement for my paper. In fact, I found it difficult constructing my entire introduction. As of right now, my introduction does not even have a thesis statement. I try to use everything we talk about in class and apply it to my paper, but judging from my last two papers, I am obviously doing something wrong, because I just cannot seem to make an “A”. The thesis statement it like the backbone to the paper. It very important, it is supposed to be strong and hold the paper together. I am having a really hard time coming up with a thesis for this paper. There is so much different information to go into this paper it is hard to pull out the main part. My articles are both comparing The Swimmer to different stories and how they are similar and different. I think that this paper will be one that I will have to rewrite the thesis a couple times and after the rest of the paper is written. The articles are alike on one interpretation, however. They both view the south vs. north conflict as a basis for Emily’s attraction to Homer Barron. They both concluded that in order to rebel against her southern town and their ideals, she starts to like Homer, a northern construction worker. Both articles also mention the fact that Faulkner writes this story out of chronological order. The article by Dilworth, parallels Emily to Queen Victoria. He makes the comparison based on the idea of picking a lover that would go against the people that were around them. Scherting’s article mainly talks about how Homer Barron was merely a surrogate for Emily’s father. I don’t really know how to put these differences into a good thesis. I’m not completely sure, but a possible thesis for my paper may be: Cheever’s The Swimmer can be interpreted in several different ways. Critics, Blythe and Sweet, allude this short story, not only to the Grail myth, but also to season and historical events. On the other hand, Kozikowski looks more at the biographical details of Cheever and how they parallel his story, as well as how The Swimmer compares to Dante’s Inferno. I haven’t exactly come up with a specific thesis statement yet, but a possible thesis for my paper would have to include the main comparison between my two interpretations. I will compare the differences and similarities between the complexities of opinions between scholars on the article “The Swimmer”, by John Cheever. The articles both have some things in common like giving examples of how Neddy compares to Dante and his travels through hell. However, the articles differ as well in comparing how Neddy can be seen on a journey, how alcohol is implemented, and other examples. The main comparison between the two literary interpretations of A Rose for Emily is the subject area in which the interpretations focus on. One article focuses on the narrator and the anonymous role the narrator plays in the plot. The second article focuses on the motive of the murder of Homer committed by Emily. This is the most obvious difference between the two articles as the first article dissects the information given to the reader by the narrator and attempts to further interpret the story through the narrator’s point of view. The second article explores the psychological and Oedipus complex that play into the motive behind Homer’s murder. I hope to combine these ideas into a more compact thesis statement. To be quite honest I don't really plan my statement when writing my paper. The normal process for me would be just to sit down in front of my computer and write the entire thing down in one sitting, with a few breaks in between. So once I have written it down, I go back and look at my introduction and see which sentence ended up being my thesis statement and then if it doesn't sound that great I go back and change it, along with the other grammatical and common errors. I don't like to think too much about it because it works better for me if I just let it form on its own, as silly as that sounds. Coming up with a good thesis seems to be one of my weak points. But I found a few ways to make it a little easy for me. I write my whole paper first then go back and write the last sentence of my introduction (thesis). I’m sure if the is the correct protocol or not but I believe that it helps me to write a sentence that “encompasses the main comparison I’ll be making” if I have already written the main comparisons in my paper. But if I had to try I would probably have a something like this
