Knack
I would tend to agree with this statement because some people are born to be naturally better writers than others. However, it is also true that practice makes perfect, therefore it would only make since to say that writing is also easier for people who practice more. I would not know if writing is easier for people born with the knack for I know I was not born with it. I had many friends in high school that could literally write a brilliant paper in just a few hours, while in that time mine would be nothing short of a disaster. It might be a generalization that people who are good at writing were born with a knack for it, so this statement is just as equally false as it is correct. WILL SEYMOUR Posted at 08:10AM Apr 20, 2009 by William Seymour in General | How easy is writing "Writing is easy for people born with the knack." I don't believe this quote at all. I think that everybody has to work equally hard to become a good writer, but the people who enjoy it are the ones that will become the great writers. If a kid learns he enjoys writing when he is in elementary school, he will learn to develop and advance his skill of writing, making it better. As to where we all start off, I think that everybody starts off at the same level, but the people who enjoy it utilize it more, making them better writers. An easy of interesting topic can make the process alot more friendly. Also the amount of information available on a given topic can influence the difficulty of writing grreatly. writing quote
"Success comes to a writer, as a rule. So gradually that it is always something of a shock to him to look back and realize the heights to which he has climbed." I do agree with this quote. Writing is something that you gradually get better at. You just do not start out writing brilliant pieces of work. It is sometimes surprising to look back on my old papers and see how much I have improved with writing. To me, being a good writer is something that you have to achieve gradually over time. I agree. Over time one gets better at writing and increases their knowledge of how to write. There style and diction change. Actually a whole lot of how they write changes. As people write more they learn how to use their language to relay certain messages an to discuss certain topics. Posted at 08:24AM Apr 16, 2009 by Derek Dussek in General | Comments[1] Quote reflection You, as a writer, improve so slowly it seems to you that you are not improving at all. When you finally look back on what you have written, you find that you are considerably better than you used to be. You are shocked by this revelation and ask yourself "when did I get this good?" or "I cannot believe that I was this bad." Posted at 08:18AM Apr 16, 2009 by William Ethan Queen in General | P.G. Woderhouse Quote "Success comes to a writer, as a rule. so gradually that it is always something of a shock to him to look back and realize the heights to which he has climbed." This quote by Woderhouse is true because once I actually begin to write the creative juices start flowing. I may have the worst case of writers block but once I decide on a position to take for a paper I can write and write and write until there is nothing else to write about. I actually surprise my self by the length of the paper I have written and I feel that since I've been writing I have gotten better. I've learned to write on a more intellectual level regardless of whether that was a goal or not. Posted at 08:16AM Apr 16, 2009 by Hannah Cross in General | P.G. Wodehouse quotes I'm not quite sure if success comes as a rule when looking back at your writing. I'm sure there are feelings of a sort of success when you have accomplished so many writings but whether or not they are good is not just of your opinion. I do, however, have an example of looking back to poetry I had to write for an English project and being surprised that it was actually very well written. I believed this because there was a huge "A+" on the poetry packet and a nice commentary from the teacher. Sometimes its nice to look back at your writings and feel like you've actually accomplished something. Posted at 08:15AM Apr 16, 2009 by Kaitlin Cole Hassell in General | P.G. Wodehouse
4/16 I agree. On all projects, whether it be a paper, building something, or even training a puppy, you don’t really realize all the progress you are making and how much you are really putting in to your project until the very end. Progress usually comes in small spurts. You work on your conclusion, then take a break and work on this paragraph or that paragraph, and then you finally go to your conclusion, while never really getting to see the work as a whole. I think while working on something we are always looking to what we need to do next, what we could add, or what we could change and you don’t see just how much you already have. Finally, when you are through and you have no more to add, change, or do next you can look back and see just how far you have come and just how great your success is. Posted at 08:14AM Apr 16, 2009 by Catherine Miller in General | Comments[1] Quote I disagree with the quote, “Success comes to a writer, as a rule, so gradually that it is always something of a shock to him/her to look back and realize the heights to which he/she has climbed.” This quote states that a writer never knows when they have something that is successful. However I disagree that I writer never knows if something is successful. I think that writers will almost always know when something that they have written is good or not. Also I think that writers will never look back and think that they never thought that something would never be that good. Posted at 08:14AM Apr 16, 2009 by Michael Simpson in General | P.G. Wodehouse
I think that writing is somewhat of an uphill climb. It takes lots of trial and editing before one can reach his ultimate writing style. Even now, as I am in college, I look back on previous writings that I have completed in lower level courses and I too am shocked to see how far my writing has come. As I’ve advanced my writing has matured and the formality and academic quality comes a bit more naturally than before. It surprises me to see how far I’ve come in my writing as it surprised P.G. Wodehouse. Progression through writing is a gradual process. Posted at 08:14AM Apr 16, 2009 by Danielle Moser in General | P.G. Wodehouse Quote
I agree with Wodehouse’s quote. You do not start out a good writer, it does come gradually. When you really become a successful writer, looking back on previous work can be surprising as to how far you have come. The fact of realizing that you are now a successful writer is an elating feeling. When I know that I have written something well I am proud and self-satisfied. Posted at 08:13AM Apr 16, 2009 by Natalie Roberts in General | Wodehouse Quote I think that this quote is very accurate. Since I'm still not a very good writer, I haven't had that shocking moment yet when I realized how far I had come, but I can understand his meaning that writing, like most things, takes time to master. I can imagine most authors were at one time not very good writers but, because of their love for it, became competent through lots and lots of hard work. Being a good writer is certainly a good skill to have so I think it is worthwhile to put time and effort into it. After I write a paper and go back to read it I always surprise myself as to what I have done. When I write I feel like I am not going anywhere with it most of the time, but after I have completed the assignment it feels good to be done because you have accomplished it. Sometimes I can surprise myself with how long my paper turns out also. Sometimes though writing can be complicated and I may not feel like I have finished. I definitely agree with what P.G. Wodehouse says. Just from looking back at 9th grade in high school I can tell a major difference in how my writing has improved since then. I believe Wodehouse is correct in saying that writing is something that takes a very long time to become proficient. During this semester I didn't really notice any improvements in my writing except that I was learning to write new styles of analytical papers. I know now that learning new styles of writing is also a big step in becoming a more successful writer as now I have more options in which form of a paper I want to write.
