A team of College of Natural Resources researchers at NC State University receive a Federal Urban and Community Forestry Grant to examine the potential for urban and community forests to promote physical activity.

Changes in the State Health Plan that threaten to penalize some overweight employees starting in 2011 raise the question: What's available at work to help faculty and staff members lose weight and live healthier lives? 

Employees in the College of Natural Resources (CNR) are showing what can be done, on their own, to improve their health and fitness.  The program, called CNR Fit for Life, was launched last May to give employees in the college a free and easy option for exercising during their lunch break.

The Forest Nutrition Cooperative (FNC) celebrated its 40th anniversary October 6-8, 2009, at its Annual Meeting hosted by North Carolina State University. From its beginning in 1969 with a small membership and regional research focus, FNC has developed into a multi-university, international partnership that is creating innovative solutions to enhance forest productivity and value through the sustainable management of site resources.[Read More]

Robert Jetton, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources and a Project Leader in Camcore, is the 2009 recipient of the Roger F. Anderson Memorial Outstanding Graduate Student Award sponsored by the Southern Forest Insect Work Conference for his research conducted as a PhD student in entomology with a co-major in forestry at NC State University.[Read More]

Twenty Wake County high school students from four high schools gathered at North Carolina State University's Schenck Memorial Forest for the 2009 Wake County FFA Forestry Contest.  Participating high schools included East Wake, Knightdale, Wake Forest, and Wakefield.  The Wakefield team, lead by teacher Jodi Riedel, placed first in the competition.[Read More]

Wood Products students are combining community service for Habitat for Humanity with mastering the concepts of sustainable wood and wood products manufacturing in a new course at NC State.

As part of a team at NC State, researchers in the Department of Wood and Paper Science apply their pulp & paper expertise to help "SHE" combat a hindrance to education and employment for women in impoverished and developing countries.

Dr. Hasan Jameel, Ellis Signe Olssen Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Wood & Paper Science at North Carolina State University, has been selected by the College of Natural Resources to receive the Board of Governor's College Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Along with a cash award and recognition at a campus-wide event in the Spring, Jameel will be a nominee for the University Board of Governor's Award.

North Carolina State University, along with the Southern Growth Policies Board, The Energy Foundation, NC Greenpower and SAFER Alliance, will sponsor this year's The Green Business Forum on Friday, October 23, at the NC Biotechnology Center in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Robert D. Brown, dean of the NC State University College of Natural Resources was recognized as a Fellow of The Wildlife Society (TWS) at the Society's 2009 annual meeting in Monterey, CA.  The career award recognized Dr. Brown’s contributions to science and to The Wildlife Society. 

Despite drought conditions in parts of the state for most of the year, there should be plenty of colorful foliage worth seeing across North Carolina this fall, according to a North Carolina State University expert. Dr. Robert Bardon, associate professor of forestry and extension forestry specialist at NC State, says that in areas of the state that have experienced drought, people should expect to see colors early, and that the leaves will change color faster.   [Read More]
