Posted by mmrust ( Aug 31 2009, 09:06:07 AM EDT )First Year College (FYC) welcomed 665 new students to campus this week. This year’s class of FYC students represents 14% of the total incoming freshman class, making FYC the 3rd most popular program of NC State’s 10 undergraduate colleges.
All NC State students have been taking part in Wolfpack Welcome Week activities, but FYC Village students enjoyed an additional welcome program: Path to the Pack (P2P). Sponsored by University Housing and FYC, P2P provided unique opportunities for FYC Village students to explore their new campus home, engage with other new students, and start learning how to excel here at NC State.
P2P began on Saturday after students started checking in to the FYC Village with an Amazing Race around campus. Participants raced in groups to paint the Free Expression Tunnel, cheer with the NC State cheerleaders at the Memorial Bell Tower, meet and take a picture with Dr. Banks Talley—for whom Talley Student Center is named, and sing songs from “Grease” in front of Thompson Theatre.
The winners, “Team Blue 6,” completed the race in a record 47 minutes. Congrats to race winners, Dustin Miner, Zach Ray, Kaysuv Boyiena, Brittany Hall (Resident Adviser), Rachel Caballero, Kevin Garton, and Philip Barefoot.
P2P concluded Sunday with a Pizza Taste-Off on the Tucker Beach, an info session on getting involved on campus, and group meetings with FYC Advisers.
On Monday a small group of FYC Students were privileged to meet Greg Mortenson, co-author of NC State’s 2009 Summer Reading selection, Three Cups of Tea. Mr. Mortenson had tea and cookies with our students, taking their questions about his unique experiences.
All FYC students attended university convocation Monday evening. Convocation included performances from the Marching Band, a welcome from Chancellor Jim Woodward and the Student Body President, and an address by Greg Mortenson.
First Year College is profiled in a new book for university educators: Designing Effective Assessment: Principles and Profiles of Good Practice, edited by Banta, Jones, and Black and published by Jossey-Bass.
The book's profile of FYC discusses how the program has developed and used the Student Experiences Survey (administered at the end of each semester to students in the USC 101/102 course) and other assessment methods to make decisions about FYC programs.
The profile was written by Kim Outing, FYC Assistant Director for Assessment, and Karen Hauschild, FYC Associate Director.

For the third consecutive year, the FYC Village is looking for students to leave their mark on campus! We are looking for new freshmen with some artistic ability (either verbal or visual) to submit their creative works to the FYC Wolfpack Welcome Week committee!
There are two options for the mural competition:
OPTION 1--VISUAL*:
Here’s your chance to add to the walls of Tucker Residence Hall. Interested students must submit the following materials (no later than August 7th, 2009) to be considered for the contest:
*The contest winner must choose 2 or 3 friends/Village residents to help complete the mural, as well as determine a “to be completed by date” with the Housing Assistant Director.
OPTION 2--VERBAL:
We recognize that not everyone is visually artistic and would like to encourage students who are interested to submit a 2-page description of what your mural would look like if you were to draw it out. (Unfortunately, students who submit a literal interpretation only will not be considered for the mural contest, but will be able to attend “Pennies with a Purpose” where the winning entry will be announced).
Entries can be mailed or emailed to:
