My Experience at the Career Fair
At the career fair I spoke with Heather Tart from the Wake County Extension Office. She is an Extension Agent working primarily with 4-H Youth Development. When I went to the booth I shook hands with Heather and introduced myself with my elevator speech and asked about summer internship opportunities. I learned a lot about the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and about what an extension agent does. I learned that the internship opportunities vary from county to county so I would need to check with the extension office in my hometown for opportunities there.
My future career goal is to become an Ag Teacher. I’ve always thought that it would be interesting to be an extension agent though, because you get to work with farmers and other members of the community to help solve problems that may arise in your field of expertise. My career goals in some ways match with this organization. In teaching I would be dealing with a younger demographic and teaching them, not really advising them. As an extension agent I would be dealing with an older demographic and advising them on their problems that they occur in horticulture or crop science.
The conversation did not really help me make a step forward in reaching my goals. It did in some ways, but not in others. It helped me to learn that in whichever job I choose I’m going to be dealing with people all the time and sometimes it might not be that easy.
As I approached the recruiter I felt kind of nervous to begin with but once I started talking everything just fell into place. It was the initial going up to the recruiter that was the hard part for me. Once a conversation is started I can carry it on, but initiating one for me is the hard part. One thing I need to work on is going up to people and introducing myself. Once I get that down, I think I will be fine.
I learned from the recruiter that if I work hard and do good in school it will pay off and I will be able to find a really nice job, whether it be teaching or an extension agent. How I do in college will affect everything. I need to work hard and study hard to be successful, and then in four years I will be able to find me a nice job and become either a successful teacher or extension agent.
