Electronic augmententing Face-to-Face or the other way around?

In the "Creating Passionate Users" blog post "Changing the User Experience without changing the product"

"If we want to give our users a higher-res experience, some kind of live event in the Real World might be a very effective tool."

This is exactly where Extension excels. She uses the example of her daughter attending a concert and changing what she heard when she listened to the same CDs she listened to before the concert.

"Because of her experience at Bonnaroo, the CDs just up and re-recorded and re-mixed themselves. Just like that. And all because of a single event. Skyler now hears layers and unusual time signatures and extra beats and... on it goes. She won't shut up about it. It is as if by magic*, the music pressed on those CDs really did evolve."

Our online delivery of information can be augmented by the face-to-face delivery.  In today's world with internet penetration at 73% of ALL adults and 88% (Demographics of Internet Users) of the 18-29 year-old population we need to think of our online delivery being augmented by the face-to-face delivery, not the other way around - which is the mindset of most Extension professionals.  We can only reach a small percentage of the population via face-to-face compared with reaching them online.  When they come to us online they can spend their time getting the information they need.  When they come to a meeting (other than a one-on-one visit) the majority of the information doesn't apply to them personally.  Online they can skip over that which doesn't apply to them or that they already know and get straight to the information they want and need - assuming it is there to be found and organized in a manner in which they can get to it.

The Pew Internet and American Life Project has lot of researched based reports on what and how people are using the internet.

Internet Penetration and Impact

I'm seeing more and more high quality online instruction.  The most recent I've seen are:
Federal Emergency Management Agency's classes
and Boy Scouts of America's classes
  • Youth Protection (under the General category)
