Over the last couple of months, I've grown to love RSS. (If you don't know what RSS is, read this page: What is RSS?)
At first I was sceptical and didn't see the advantage of adding one more thing (my news reader) to check on a regular basis. I preferred subscribing to newsletters via email and getting the content that way.
A few months ago, when I started my browser I had several pages load
automatically because they had content that changed frequently and I
wanted to visit them every day. Every one of them had an RSS feed for the content that was changing. I now have my home page set to my Newsgator page where I've collected more than 30 different feeds. Fortunately, most of these don't add content every day.
Now, when I look at a web page and think, "I would like to monitor this site" chances are real good that they have an RSS feed. If they don't, I get frustrated and chances are very good that I won't be monitoring that site for changes.
Some of the advantages to subscribing to RSS feeds are:
- I can check them when I want
- They don't clutter up my email box
- I am able to keep up to date on a lot of different topics very easily
All I have to do to see if a site has an RSS feed is look in the Location bar of my Firefox window for the little orange icon. If I see that, then I can go to my reader and add that site's feed. If you aren't using Firefox, look for a link that says "RSS", "XML" or "Atom".
If you aren't using RSS to keep up with what's going on in your field, you're not keeping up.

Don't know how I survived before completely switching over to syndication as my window to the world. Someone asked me last week how I find things on the Internet. I answered, "I don't. It finds me." Between my newsreader and del.icio.us my Web habits have completely changed in the last year.
Only 30 feeds? I'm at over a 1000. Might be time to prune. :)
